Joe's Valley 10-05
#1
The weather forecast was just too good to stay home and wish I was fishin'. I drove down to Joe's Valley and put in 6 hours of casting big swimbaits for the tigers. The weather forecast was correct for today. It was quite cool when I launched at about 0845 at the boat ramp on the east side of the lake. There was one other boater out this morning and it happened to be a friend of mine from Emery County.

I could see my friend down close to the dam so I went over and said hello. He was using tube jigs tipped with a piece of chub in an effort to catch cutts or splake. He told me he had caught one 18" cutt and he had a fish on when I pulled up. The fish came unbuttoned just as I got within speaking distance. I hadn't seen Dale for a long time so we spent a little time catching up. It looks like our plans will come together next week at an undisclosed location.

I started fishing on the rocky points on the west side of the lake and as frequently happens, I could see a few large muskie just sunning themselves in the shallows. Of course if you can see them, they can see you and they will rarely take a lure.

Long story short. Nearly 6 hours of non-stop casting large swimbaits resulted in just one hit. I hooked a very large muskie in the south end of the lake. I had it on for just a few seconds but I did get a pretty good look at it. I would estimate it was in the 45 to 48 inch range and very healthy. I'd have to say the hit and brief hookup made up for the slow day. I got some quality time on one of my favorite places.

The fall colors are in full splendor and the crowds were coming in for the elk hunt which starts on Saturday. I hope to hit Joe's again this fall and get a "grin and grab" photo of one of the toothy critters.

Thanks for the report. I'd be happy with hooking a muskie that size anywhere!
