Utah Lake Islands - Commentary
#1
[#0000FF]There was an interesting and informative commentary in the Salt Lake Tribune this morning on the proposed development of Utah Lake.

I don't fish Utah Lake. Have been there exactly once. But even I know the proposal to dredge and "islandize" it is absolutely insane.

[#0000FF]We can only hope that saner heads prevail when it comes time to grant permits and approvals for their grandiose scheme. It needs to die before it ever starts to breathe. Personally, I am increasingly optimistic that as more light is shone upon it, in all its glory, the more exposed its fallacies and foibles...and the less likely it will ever get beyond the dreaming stage.

Sad, isn't it, that there are so many hare-brained projects that ultimately enrich a select few at the expense of so many?

Rocky, I cannot believe that you have never fished Utah Lake. While it looks muddy and not inviting, it is really one of the delights of Utah. you need to get Tube Dude to take you out and introduce you to the wonders of Utah Lake. In addition to the wonderful fishing, the bird life found there is incredible. Dr White, retired prof. at BYU told us that there are more species of shore birds found in the Utah lake marshes than any other place in the west. The other day while fishing for White Bass ( it was very, very, slow) I had two groups of cranes fly over, squaking and making a racket. You can see Snowy Egrets, Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, many different species of ducks, geese, Curlews, Ibis, the list goes on and on. Take your fairy wand, slow sinking line, and some of TD's cement hd. wonders ( forget what he calls them) and work them for the WB. You will get hooked !!!

This lake island scheme is exactly that , a scheme and it needs to be shut down ASAP. Let the State Legislator's know that under no circumstances should it be allowed to go forward !! PERIOD !!

My favorite part of the article? The two writer of the piece are experts in the field of aquatic ecology and study with Utah Lake in their back yard.
If you approach the subject on social media all you find in opinion and personal emotion as to why this SCAM island idea would be great.

And they are always relentless until they get what they want. I hope not in this case. As an example, the prison relocation comes to mind because a select few are going to get fat.

I was taught in college that people are convinced by three things, ethos, logos, and pathos.

Translated from Latin, it is emotion, logic, and testimonials.

Can you guess which the order of most effective is?

Emotion is most convincing, next testimonials, then logic is last.

Can you guess which is most correct in the long term?

Well, of course logic is, the most important is the least effective.

Logic requires education, rational thinking, and supportive evidence. Emotion requires nothing but support from other emotional people.

Social media is a master of emotional group think.

While I support free speech, I am starting to wish social media had never been invented.

I hope that logical minds win out in this debate, and you already know my position regarding this development plan.

Almost like when they wanted to make the east side of the great salt lake a fresh water lake decades ago by damming the lake north and south of Antelope island.
