4/1 Middle Provo
#1
Finally put my ice gear away and had the chance to bust out my new fly rod. I picked up an Orvis Recon 10' 3 weight to replace my 10' 4 weight Cabelas CZN rod. I hit the Middle Provo on Sunday and had a great day giving the new rod a workout. Ended up with 22 browns, all pretty average. Amazing how much nicer the Orvis felt than the Cabelas. The CZN was a great rod for the money, but it pales in comparison to the Orvis.

Could have done without the wind, but overall it was a beautiful day. Lots of BWOs in the early afternoon along with a few midges. Didn't see hardly any noses above the water though. I'm a nympher so that didn't bother me as they weren't overly picky with fly choices. I did pump one fish and there were plenty of small midges, a caddis larva, and a couple BWOs about size 18-20. My size 18 iron lotus is in the pic for comparison.

I didn't notice until I was looking at the pics, but the guy in the last fish pic has a bunch of orange dots on his dorsal fin. I've seen plenty on the adipose fin but I don't believe I've ever seen them on the dorsal. Wish I would have seen that on the river to get a better pic but still neat none the less. Fishing should be solid till the run-off, if there is much of one this year.

Great report! Especially liked the nymph/natural comparison. I really need to get out on the water. Thanks!

Thanks for the comparison pic. It was neat to show my son that I’m trying to get into fly fishing how flys look like what they eat so I appreciate it. Great job on the dayfishing and congrats on the new pole. I just replaced my Cabela’s rod with a fenwick and haven’t had a chance to get out and use it yet but am getting itching to try.

I'm no entomologist, but it's fun to see what's under the rocks vs. what's in their bellies vs. what flies they are willing and not willing to eat on any particular day. What's strange is I usually have less success with really close imitations as opposed to semi-imitative flies with some flash.
