Wind Blown at Utah Lake
#1
After reading several reports about white bass and catfish at Utah lake and getting skunked at Willard on Saturday I launched from Lindon on Sunday morning, we motored to the creek between Lindon and American Fork to find a boat anchored up in there catching white bass so we moved on to the bubble up and then up to American Fork Harbor where we saw Tin Can launching his boat. I realized I was running out of gas so, I ran back to Lindon, put my boat on the trailer and headed to Maverick to put gas in the boat, while relaunching my boat I spotted the boat that had been previously anchored in the creek pulling away from the dock. My partner and I motored out of the Marina right behind them, and the race was on, fortunately my boat was faster than theirs and we beat them to the creek got set up and proceeded to loading up the cooler with white bass. The bite slowed and we decided to use some of our catch to chase some cats so we ran down to the bubble up and put out our lines and only managed to catch mud cats. We decided to go back to the creek to catch more white bass when we got there, a boat was in there, so we anchored 100 yards outside and put out our catfish lines to wait them out, figuring they would leave soon as they where not catching anything, after 30 minutes or so and a couple mud cats they left and we moved back in and started catching white bass again. Then the WIND came, it went from flat calm to 46 mph sustained winds from the south, just the time when the the choke on my out board decided to get stuck, killing the the motor 100 feet of the shore. The waves and wind pushed us back into the reads next to the mouth of the creek where we waited out the gale force winds for an hour until, I was able to get out of the boat and push it through the reads back into the creek where we got the motored started and running and motored back in 20 mph wind and waves. At the mouth of the harbor there was a guy who's boat was pushed up onto the jetty and was bailing water he was being assisted by several people on shore so, I wasn't the only one that got caught by the gale. The wind at Utah Lake is no joke, my wife wants to ban me from there.

I'm glad you are safe. A cautionary tale for all of us.

The older I get the more I would rather be considered a good man than a good fisherman.

Hey, glad you got off the water OK, even if a bit wet. We had been out along the American Fork north-west bank, and then back to the reed area just outside the boat harbor on the east side of the jetty. Wife caught 2 decent Cats, and we put a few whities in the bag to use as bail on a later trip. I caught 2 Mud Cats that I wouldn't even bring in the boat, just cut the lines. We watched that big dark cloud start building up against the mountain and decided to call it a day. Got the boat on the trailer, and all the way home just in front of the wind. So all-in-all not a bad day.

That’s almost scary, glad your safe and damage was done. I almost went out and after reading this I’m so glad I didn’t. Thanks for sharing this scary ordeal.
