Saw a shore angler lose a rod over a week ago as, we were coming into the channel to the South marina. Knowing how hard wipers pull I guess it could have been a shore angler that lost it. How was the fishing for you? Did you catch the fish or the line that had the rod and reel attached?

We saw a red and white bobber floating so went to see and the pole was floating by the bobber retrived it and started reeling it there was a fish on it but the line broke before we could see what it was. Fishing was a little slow for us we caught one walleye but caught a bunch of smallmouth one was a 17 incher

[#0000FF]Hey ol' buddy, how are ya? Glad to see you are still out fishing. Haven't seen you for a while. Hope you are in good health and all that.

[#0000FF]My best tackle catch at Willard happened while I was pitching plastics out off the north dike. I had a funny "rubber band" take on my jig, set the hook and was fighting SOMETHING. I worked it in and discovered I had hooked a line with a wiper attached on one end and a rod and reel on the other.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]I netted the wiper, which had a big bait hook in the corner of it's jaw...probably from a mussel dunker. Then I pulled in the rod, hand over hand. It looked new. I heard a shout from the nearby rocks. A couple of guys saw me bring in the rod and hollered that a fish had taken one of theirs. Being a nice guy I told them if they could describe the rod and reel I would bring it in to them...along with the fish. They did and I did. We all had a good chuckle about that and they were very appreciative that I had caught the rod...and that I returned it to them.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]Hope someone spots your post and that you are able to return the rod to its former owner.

Wow a 17" SMB is a good one for Willard, were you trolling or casting when you caught the SMB?

[#0000FF]There are some nice smallies in Willard. And it seems they are becoming more plentiful. I attribute it to the water remaining high up into the rocks and making for better spawning and recruitment of crawdads...smallie candy.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]Attached is a pic of a 17 incher I got last year pitching plastics around the humps and bumps off Eagle Beach.

Those bigs ones must be holdovers from years past. As you said, this high water is really helping folks catch them in bigger numbers than they have for a lot of years. How much would you say that 17" bass weighted, that you caught?

[#0000FF]Probably somewhere between 1.5 - 2 pounds. Didn't weigh it. Just gave it a smooch and sent it back.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]I have had more than a few "conversions"...from former troutaholics to confirmed cataholics. What is really cool is hearing them say they ain't ever goin' to eat trout again after they get some good catfish.

Yes, sent him home with some smoked kitty. Two hours later he texted asking for the recipe. Told him it starts with seven to ten freshly caught fish. Also informed him that wiper he caught and released just might have made the best fish tacos he's ever had.

Good to hear from you I was suprised to catch such a big smallie. We went camping there and thought we would try some smallmouth fishing so we headed to the northeast corner the boat was in twelve feet of water and we caught a dozen smallies before getting blowed off the lake. The 17 incher was a fatty i think it weighed close to three pounds. the walleye fishing has been pretty slow compared to other years

[#0000FF]Good to hear you had some decent action...even if you did have to settle for smallies instead of wallies.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]Most of the larger smallmouths I have caught have been from Eagle Beach to the North Dike. Lots of smaller ones all around the lake.
