• Jeremy Woinarowicz of East Grand Forks is one of 18 Minnesota conservation officer candidates set to begin training Feb. 25 at the DNR's Conservation Officer Academy at Camp Ripley near Little Falls, Minn. Most recently a police officer for the Grand Forks Police Department, Woinarowicz will work as a DNR conservation officer in Thief River Falls. Currently, 30 of the DNR's 150 conservation officer field stations are vacant, including four in the Baudette area and six in the Bemidji area.

• A Minnesota House committee has passed a bill that would permit mourning dove hunting in Minnesota for the first time in decades. Minnesota's last dove hunting season was in 1946, and proposals to reinstate it have failed more than 20 times since then. The majority of states, including North Dakota, have seasons on mourning doves. The bill, which now goes to the full House, is expected to meet more opposition in the Senate.

• The Min-Dak Border Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association collected 919 deer hides during its 2003 Hides for Habitat campaign. Money raised from the project will go toward funding habitat near Mentor, Minn., and restoration of habitat within the Greenway.
