Hey all I went out on the pond this afternoon after work and took my spud bar with me... Usually I haven't been able to knock a hole through the ice without really working to get through it with the spud bar... This afternoon four hits knocks a big hole through the ice... Looks like about 7" total ice now, but only an inch or so of solidish looking ice and that inch crumbles and has like pores running through it where I guess ice is melting and the water is draining out of the ice... I think we are at the end of our low elevation ice season... Top six inches are mushy white terrible looking ice... Be very careful this weekend and the edges were crumbly so a plank to get on the ice is probably a good idea as well.. I wanted to go tomorrow, but probably won't... I don' t really want to go swimming in that cold of water... It held, but my trust is really fading... This was on a pond in Benson, not one of the regular lakes, but it has had about the same ice conditions for most of the winter, as Hyrum... But it is a lot shallower, so maybe it is melting faster... Let me know if things are still good on Hyrum or Porcupine... Thanks J

Thanks. Just a good reminder for everyone to check as you walk. Ice is so inconsistent. You never know. My Flaming Gorge spot is so variable. I take the Snowdog on one spot, and it’s fine. Others are a sketchy. Beware everyone.

Thanks for the reminder, Jeff. I'll be sure to stay off your pond. Things are looking very slushy out here in the Basin too.

Ya know I think the scary deal with spring ice is really crappy ice holds pretty good until you cross a certain line and then it just crumbles out from under you. That’s what scares me the worst and why I probably quit before I should. But better safe than sorry. Fishing hasn’t been great anyway so I’m weaning myself away from it. Been a fun year. Later J

Tried my pond last night and stepped through it every spot I tried to get on it. I thought the cold nights would have saved it but it didn’t. Have you heard how the gorge around Anvil draw is holding up? I’d love to try it again but my wife has other ideas I’m afraid. Later J

Thank you so much for the report, that sounds good to me... Probably won't get to go, but just in case, I want to know I'd be able to fish if I get there... Thank you and sounds like you did well.. Congrats... Jeff

My weather station tells me it has been 49° steady since noon yesterday, with heavy warm rain forecast for the next 36 hours.
I think our low-elevation hard deck is going bye-bye.

Please post on your FG trip. I'm hoping to spend next week up there in the Buckboard area.

Rocky I think you are correct on the end being very near... at least for places like Cutler and I know Porcupine is getting hard to access the ice sheet, even though the ice island was still pretty thick that is floating in the middle.. Makes things a lot more difficult this time of year... I guess where there is a will, it's possible, but not for the fair weather icers anyway... I think the chances of getting wet this time of year is much higher than during the rest of the season... but maybe since it's not so cold, you might be able to get out and warmed up before you freeze to death... Not sure I'm into shock therapy though.. Later J
