Woodruff Reservoir - 03/01/2019
#1
Where: Woodruff Reservoir

Had to make the trip back to Woodruff on my snowmobile at least one more time. I debated hard between Flaming Gorge and Woodruff and decided that I wanted to try and repeat our amazing fish day that we had on 2-22. I could have almost copy and pasted the last report. A few details changed, but for the most part it was a repeat.

When: 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Group's Fish Caught: 20 ish

We fished in 25-30 feet of water. Most fish came off the bottom, but we did connect with some in the 10-20 foot range. Not one fish came off a dead stick, but they responded best to 'feather jigging'. Not sure if that is a real term, but I would jig 1-3 feet to bring 'em in and then wiggle the rod to try and attract the bite. This worked for several of the fish caught. My FIL said he caught several of his on the drop of his jig stroke.

Baits/Lures: Green jig heads with green glow tube jigs and gizzilla crazy glow bugs. We tipped with worms.

Ice Condition: 2" Snow on top, 2-3 inches of ice, ~4 inches of slush, and 12" of ice. The melt is clearly on. Edges were still solid, but I don't expect them to hold out for more than a week unless we get some cold weather.

Weather: Mid 30's all day, beautiful skies, and quite a bit of wind. We had to fish with our backs to the wind, but it was sunny!

Company on the Ice: 0 The three of us were the lone fisherman all day. The road from the private drive turnoff was still snow packed and drifted, but clearly in the beginning of a melt. I would expect it to be muddy muddy in the coming weeks.

Another great report, thanks for sharing it with us, not many folks hit that lake in the Winter. Have you ever tried to ice fish on that other lake up there, Birch creek or is the trail up the dam too steep for snowmobiles?

I have not tried Birch Creek, but I am going to hit it this summer when the drive from Ogden is shorter going over Monte Cristo. I have never even been there so I can't say if a Snowmobile could make it over the Dam. My father in law has been to the back of the reservoir on a 4-wheeler during the hunt. He said there is some road access, so I would like to explore that option as well.

Curious if anyone knows why the DWR is not stocking Woodruff but is stocking Birch Creek?

I'm not for sure but I think Woodruff has a natural spawn of cutts that keeps up with demand but Birch Creek does not. Plus they stock tiger trout in Birch Creek, so more people fish there. It has been a number of years since I have fished Birch Creek but the last I heard that access road to the back was through private property, so i don't think just anyone can get in there.
