Palisade State Park

A friend and I heard that the ice was coming off PaliSade so we drove down today to check it out. We didn't get on the water until around 10:30 after a dicey trip over Huntington Canyon and down Fairview Canyon.

The reservoir was pretty much ice free. We launched at the boat ramp and covered most of the lake. The reservoir is about 60% full and quite murky. The visibility in the water was only about 2'.

We used medium sinking lines with size 6 & 8 crystal buggers in black/silver, black/orange/pearl, & green/pearl. We fished until about 2:15 and we only managed to pick up three tigers and eight rainbows between the two of us.

The fishing was slow but it was so good to get back in the water again and the weather couldn't have been much nicer. The winds were calm and the temperature got into the low 50's. The water temps were 40 - 43 degrees.

The rainbows were from 12" - 14", last years stocked fish. The tigers were 14" - 16" and skinny.

The were a few ducks, geese, and deer to keep us entertained while we were waiting for the next fish.[Wink]

Thanks for the report. Do you know if it ever froze up enough to ice fish on? Kinda wanted to try it out this year. I heard a report that it had a lot of ice a while ago but then a friend explained that it was for PaliSade in Idaho[:|].

The older I get the more I would rather be considered a good man than a good fisherman.

The end is near, the end is near!

The end of ice fishing is near when Tom is able to float his boat (tube).

You can stop smiling now Tom.

I'm glad you were able to scratch that itch. Me, I'm holding on 'til the bitter end. With the correct amount of good judgement and safety preparedness I think there'll be several more weeks of ice fshing at the higher elevation waters.

It's time again to be very careful on the ice. Never fish alone and keep a throw rope handy to assist someone who may fallen through the ice.

Sorry about hijacking your post Tom, but it seemed like a good venue to post the reminder for everyone to be safe.

Yes, it did freeze over enough to ice fish. I saw some photos of the ice coming off from the State Park facebook page that showed where holes had been drilled.

There is not much snow on the ground in Sanpete County so PaliSade usually thaws out early. I fished PaliSade last year on February 2nd and there was no ice.

Thanks, Mike.

I know your a die hard ice guy.[Wink]

It's always a good idea to remind folks about ice safety.

I'm looking forward to getting back on Starvation with you when the ice is gone.[Smile]

I'm looking forward to ice off at Starvation. We'll have to get over there as soon as we can get in at Knight Hollow which should be the first area to open up.
