]Finally got out on the ice at Strawberry to try and get some Kokanee. I wanted to try last year, but never felt like the ice was safe enough to get out in the deep water with the machines.
So I had my son and my wonderful granddaughter for her first trip on the ice. She was so excited to get out and fish. Her little brother wanted to go as well, but he ended up not going which was good because he would have drown without a life jacket. There was so much water on the ice. In fact, I let a fish go and it didn't go down the hole. I swam between the snow and the ice. There was about 6" of water. When you walked around the snow was above our knees.
We started fishing around 7:30 am and immediately started catching fish. We caught a lot of cuts. We saw fish on the screens all day. We fished with pink cutter bugs and pumpkin colored twister tails tipped with nightcrawlers, mealworms, waxworms and gulp maggots, pretty much anything worked.
We were fishing in about 80 feet of water. All the fish were suspended between 25 to 50 feet of water.
We were having a great time together as a family and especially watching my 6 year old granddaughter catching fish and having a great time. She really loves to fish and be in the outdoors. She loves fishing with her Dad and her Grandpa.
Finally towards the end of the day my son caught the one and only 19 1/2" kokanee. I have to admit I was a little jealous that he caught to 1st and only.
I can't wait for the ice to come off so I can get in my boat and catch more kokanee. I am a Kok addict!
