Bells, Bugs and Howling on the Bear
#1
I made an early morning trip out to the Bear River on Saturday morning. Had the poles in the water at 4:55 a.m. down near the bottom near the refuge gate. Fishing was slow but about 15 minutes later I had something happen that really surprised me, a coyote started howling across the river on the north side. I have hunted coyotes in the past and spent a lot of time chasing them in my younger days. Definitely a coyote howling. That first howl started a chorus of yapping and howling from several locations on the refuge, including on the south side of the river. This lasted for about 10 minutes then quit. I guess coyotes will set up wherever there is food, even out in the marshland.

Fishing was slow there so I relocated up the river. Thank goodness I brought the bug spray. I was assaulted by mosquitos They were very bad at that location. I set a pole up downriver with a big carp chunk on a circle hook. Placed it in a rod holder and placed a clip on bell near the rod tip. It was still dark out. I walked upriver about 30 yards or so and put the other line in the water. Then I heard the bell going off. I ran down to the pole and it was bent over and throbbing with a fish on. Ended up being a nice 26 inch cat hooked in the corner of the mouth with the circle hook. I set the pole up again and returned to my other pole. 5 minutes later the bell is ringing again. I run down again and see the same thing, pole bent with a good fish on. Ended up being a 28.5 incher, hooked in the corner with the circle hook. Set it up a third time and returned into the other pole. Not long and you guessed it, bell went off again. Unfortunately, I missed that fish, just didn't stick. Then the sun started to poke over the mountains and the bite shut off at that location. I moved again and caught another 26" cat.

I have had that bell in my backpack for a while and have never used it. It actually made the trip quite fun, just something different to try. I will probably have to go out and give it another try in the dark and hope to hear that sweet bell ringing again.

Sunrise was gorgeous.

Sunrise out there can be really beautiful. Been out there a couple times in the last month where the moon was setting in the west and the sun rising in te east, at the same time. Nice.
Wife and I got on the river Sunday with the boat. Only a very few bank anglers. Took the river all the way to the bottom from the ramp to the gates. Sure wish I had a crossbow. Carp were EVERYWHERE ! But never got a nibble on anything we had in the water. Left about 1230.

What a great story! Thanks for sharing. Did the second rod ever catch a fish?

I have a bell or two in my tackle but hardly ever use them. Last year I bought some of those glow stick things that attach to your rod for night fishing. It is really cool to see them dance whan a big fish hits, but no music. I may have to re-think that. In the boat I'm afraid the bell would ring with the rocking and drive me nuts, but I might still try it[Wink]

Yes the other rod did catch the fish at the last spot. That bell was surprisingly sensitive and I think on the boat it would drive anyone nuts.

I enjoyed your story as well. Those were some great fish and quite the adventure. I hate engine problems. Glad you had a backup.

It is peaceful out there at sunrise.

I have use the bell alarm. usually if I'm at my tailgate ting up a rig or cutting up bait. they're great when you cant have your eyes on the rod. the only down side is I'm always fearful of fouling the bell into the line while reeling in .and trying to get it off can be a chore when you have a real big fish on. Oh yeah and there is a bird around there that's chirp sounds a lot like a bell. It has had me run around the truck to a false alarm.

Glad to see Fish still active. I've been busy baby sitting grandkids the real little ones that if took them with my daughter would kill me. hope to get back out there soon.

hope to see you Paul

Lot's of coyotes out that way. Have seen a couple cross the road driving out Forest Street, seen them while driving the tour route and have had them stalking our duck decoys out on unit 9. Very adaptable animal will make do where they can find food.

I caught a 24 and a 26 inch cats last Friday out at the bottom. With the heat my best success has been fish the moving water, with a worm under a bobber, almost like I do a trout stream.

With how many that were howling I figured they were probably well established out there.

I am still finding more cats this week on a new spot I've been trying on the main river. Not fast, but still getting them. In the two times I've tried I caught a 22", 24", 25", 26" a 29" and a 29.5". The last pulled way above it's weight class and I thought I had a bumper until I got it on the bank. I could just tell it wasn't quite there but still a great fish. Still using the standard fresh carp. I'm hoping the spot will give up a bumper fish but we'll see.

Nice hear you are getting a few as well.
