Ten days out
#1
So I've been studying the weather report all fall waiting for the start of ice season on the regular ponds and it looks like to me starting next Saturday the temps will drop into the range that can make good ice and it looks like three days of good cold stuff to me following that start... I think about mid December we may be on ice that will be safe enough for most of us to feel confident... So far we have had some sketchy stuff, but I think this has promise and might be the start of the season... Let's hope the report is accurate and we can get after it... Later Jeff

I saw photos of some of the guys trying Matua this weekend. They can have it. I can wait a bit. Ain't a perch worth a dunk in the drink to me.

Yep, it's looking pretty sweet. Things do change though. I think that really the defining aspect of ice dunks in this state is the "well we're already here" mentality. It's a dangerous way to be, especially lately with how crazy the weather has been year to year. You can always call the marina before you go just to make sure. When I call Strawberry or Fish Lake, I always remember and make sure to buy some snacks, gear or beer at the store to "pay them back". There are also lake cams and commuterlink cams that give a view of some lakes. I have a live view of one of my favorite ice crappie spots....

I watch the ponds near home and if they get safe, I consider looking else where, but this ice has been so rotten from the start, that I just don't trust it this year until it gets a little thicker, but like I mentioned I think after next weekends storms it will chill off enough to make some good ice... If that keeps holding I think we'll start to get to safe ice... unless it snows enough to insulate the crappy ice underneath and no new ice forms... Then we may have a problem... I think ponds without ice may be our best first bet this year... But who knows things keep changing... Later Jeff
