On Saturday Jon and I had a plan for a really fun day that included taking our wives out fishing.
The plan was to fish Utah Lake for a couple of hours to get bait and find some fish before the girls joined us at about 9 A.M. We got to the Lincoln ramp a little after 5:30 A.M. and the place was deserted.
Two casts with white crystal bugger and we had a fresh white bass. We usually catch several on the catfish rig stinger hooks, so 1 seemed like enough. We headed northeast and started fishing in about 6.5 FOW. As usual, we strolled at around 0.7 mph running a couple different colors of Spin n Glo’s with chunks of today’s volunteer white bass.
The morning started out great with Jon getting the first fish about 15 minutes after we started, and it was 10.5 pounds! We did s turns from 6 to 9.5 FOW for the next 2 hours and ended up with 9 catfish and 5 of those were 10 to 11 pounds!

About 9 we got a call that the girls were running late, so we kept at it. About 10 we got a text that unforeseen issues were slowing them down. By then we had 12 cats with 7 at 10 or better. We rarely see that kind of size distribution until mid-September, but we were in the bigger fish today!
About 10:30 we picked up a couple of white bass. Finally, we were comfortable that we would have enough fresh bait for the girls.
Jon was catching all the big ones, until the 13th cat. I hooked one that just refused to come to the boat. When it finally tired and we netted it, it was 32” long and 13.5 pounds!

When the ladies got to the ramp it was well after 11. We had caught 17 cats and the size had stayed great with 9 of those in double digits. What a morning!
Unfortunately, the bite died down about the time we had the whole group on the water. 45 minutes into the second shift, Julie hooked a good cat. Based on what we had seen so far and the way it fought, we were sure it was another 10+, but just 10 feet from the boat it seemed to simply let go. Lots of
faces in the boat, but it was gone.
We had lots of time to catch up and enjoy the early afternoon. Thank goodness for the top! About 90 minutes after the first one came unbuttoned, she hooked another good one. This one gave her a good fight, but we got it in the boat. A heavy bodied fish at 29” and 10.5 pounds! Caroline got the last two fish of the day, they were both bullheads.

For the guys it was a great day with lots of big fish, but it was a little slow for the girls. They both said they enjoyed being out on the water, so all in all a great morning!
