The cabin fever was getting bad so saturday my son and I drove out west to Locomotive Springs. It usually stays open most of the winter and there was no ice on any of the three lakes. There were quite a few people fishing there, but not much luck. They are mainly "put and take" waters where the DWR plants the fish regularly and there isn't much carryover. The springs feed the slews and run out to the marshes of the bird refuge and they are mostly shallow. The water is quite clear and I couldn't see many trout, mostly carp. After the DWR plants it the fishing is usually really good for the planters for several weeks until it gets fished out again. One guy there said he had heard that it was supposed to be planted last Friday, but it didn't look like they had done it yet. The bugs can get real bad there later in the summer. It is very remote, and primitive and no trees but sometimes it is nice to get away from the rat race for awhile and unwind. All we caught were some carp on worms. No hits on flies or spinners. Powerbait usually catches a lot of planters when they are there. I have a map of the lakes, so if anyone wants a copy send me a PM. Acey
