South Platte River , Spinney Mountain Ranch
#1
Flow: 88 cfs

Clarity: Good

Water Temperature: Low 40’s

Major Food Organisms : Midges

Hatches: Sporadic midges

14 Day Forecast: Look for the flow to remain between the 50-80 cfs range. Midges and a few baetis will be the main hatches.

Tips and Other Information: It’s no secret that the Spinney Mountain Ranch is fishing quite well. The best fishing (for large spawn-run rainbows) is behind us now, however; there are a few large rainbows still in the river. I have found the biggest fish between gauging station and Elevenmile Reservoir. Flies of choice have been Nuclear Eggs, Orange Scuds, Mercury Flashback Pheasant Tails, Sparkle Wing RS II’s, Mercury Blood Midges, and Mercury Black Beauties. Please don’t fish to trout on redds, and pay extra attention not to walk through spawning areas (these are lighter scoured out sections of the stream). Anglers in pursuit of the resident trout will find fishing to be fair to good. Anglers can expect a few “midging” fish in the slow tail outs near the gauging station and the deep ox-bows around the “barn” area. In the vast majority of cases, when you are trying to fool these aforementioned resident fish, small midge pupa (#24 Black Beauty’s and #24 Brown Beauty’s) will be the ticket. The trout are beginning to move back into the shallow riffles, which is a sure sign spring, is right around the corner. Prepare for heavy winds, and unsettled weather patterns as spring rolls in to the South Park area. This is typically the windiest time of the year (March and April), so plan accordingly (don’t forget your eye-drops and wind block fleece)!

Effective Patterns: #20-22 Dorsey’s Mercury Pheasant Tail, #20-22 Dorsey’s Mercury Baetis, #20-22 Churchill’s Sparkle Wing RS II, #24 Black Beauty, #24 Brown Beauty, #18 Micro San Juan Worm, #16 Nuclear Egg, #20-22 Mercury Flashback Pheasant Tails, #18-20 Buckskin, #20-26 Parachute Adams, #20-24 Griffith Gnat, #20-24 Hi-Vis Baetis, and #22 Cannon’s Bunny Midge.
