STELLWAGEN BANK, MA- Cod Fishing 3/30/01

On Sunday, March 25, four of B-Fast vessels hosted the Doug Sousa (Granby, MA) two-boat charter, the Jack Eng charter ( Nanuet, NY) and the John Baron charter (N. Dartmouth,MA). The JANET B, DECISIVE, ALLIA and SAHAMY found the seas rough in the in the early morning, but the fish very
cooperative on the Bank. Doug, the promoter of the Springfield Sportsman’s Show in Massachusetts, had another banner day on his return trip to Stellwagen’s shoal water. Jigs and teasers produced cod between 6 and 15 pounds. Sand eels were in evidence for the first time in a week. On Monday, Bernie O’Briens group from Bound Brook,NJ, Bill Barbosa’s Group from Bayville, NJ and Mike Legenos’s group from Shelton, CT braved the NW breeze. The groups found fish in the shoals in early part of the day and again in the afternoon after the tide change. Along with the return of the sandeels, the groups jigged up some nice size pollock to 15 pounds from the western edge. Capt. Tim, on the ALLIA, found the fish first in the afternoon and racked up an impressive catch for Bernie’s highliners. Again on Wednesday, the NW breeze made the early going difficult. Nevertheless, Capt. Tom and Joe positioned the JANET B on top of the piles of eels so that Partyka Karol’s group, from Queens, NY, could bail the medium cod and pollock and fill the fish boxes. Although sea conditions weren’t the greatest—3-6 ft--, this trip proved to be one of the best of the week. No doubt, the return of the eels in the reason. Thursday was the best weather day of the week. Capt. Scott’s group, Bob Rini of Brooklyn, very experienced cod anglers from NY, filled the all the boxes on the DECISIVE in short order with cod and pollock up to 15 pounds. While, Rich Blakely group from Spring Lake, NJ, had a similar field day, a short distance away on the JANET B. Another NE gale coursed through New England on today. This spate of bad weather threatens cancellations on through the weekend until Wednesday.

Capt.
