Hey there StormAnimal, Hi and welcome to the BFT message boards. Thanks for your question. Did you notice if that thing makes small grunting noises at you??? If it did then it is a Yellow Croaker. They are popular along most of the coast from Malibu on down to Newport and sometimes beyond.

Feel free to share some of your fishing reports on the CA board. We would love to read them and of course see some more pictures.

There is a species that looks similar without the sounds. It is called a Corbina. Not to be confuse with the Corvina which is a much larger species.

I have caught on occasion, the Corbina and Yellow Croaker on the same fishing trip. Both the Yellow Croaker and the Corbina can be caught in the inshore waters at depths from 5' up to 60'.

It looks like a juvinille redfish but redfish are only found on the atlantic side i think ... or at lest it looks like a redfish which is part of the drum family closely related to the croakers. how big do those get over there? redfish get over 40 -50 lbs over here in florida

The Yellowfin Croaker and the Spotfin Croaker both get to around 2lbs. The state record was 4lbs.

The California Corbina which is another relative to the croaker can get up to 20lbs. There is one more cousin too.

The White Sea Bass (not a true sea bass) is also a direct relative to the Croaker and is more like the Red Fish in size.

They generally range from 20 to 50 lbs with the state record being @76lbs.[shocked]
