I have one of those retractable ones, and it's all rusted from use.
I guess I should clip it back on though.
I am also afraid of it reflecting into the water..it's silver.

You made the iron on BFT patch and you haven't thought about packing a fabric tape with you? That's what I carry for fishing.
Available for about .50 at any fabric or craft shop. Cheap, washable, stuffable, visible. I just roll it up and put it in any pocket or pouch. Well, that's how I start. It usually ends up just stuffed into a pocket I started with a green one, but it was a little hard to see in pictures, then I got a yellow 36". Works great!
Oh, yeah I edited to add that since it is flexible, so it lays the length of the fish without kinks. Much more accurate measuring. Hope it helps.
