Tri hull ???
#1

I have a 78 18’ stery tri hull open bow with 140 mec out board no power lift. Bought last spring, my first big boat when I go fast over calm water it will spray water up in front of boat and get you wet is this typical of a tri hull or do I need to adjust the position of the motor in the drive position? chip

That is the biggest diSadvantage of a tri hulled boat. Instead of pushing water out and away from the boat, it pushes some of the water up and forward, thus you drive into the spray. I know Steury made some cathedral hull boats, which is a modified tri hull. Do you know if your boat is a true tri hull, or is it the cathedral hull? What color is your boat?

Yes this is very typical of a tri hull.you have a lot wider hull with the trihull, causeing more water to be displaced from it.A tri hull will ride on top of the water as where a v-hull wil slice thru it.This is one reason that tri-hulls are such a rough ride in rough water, but on the up side the do provide a more stable platform to fish from in calm water, hence the best of both worlds.I dont know about stery boats, but i have had two tri-hulls in the past, and i one thing that i know,is that i will never own another tri-hull.

I was not looking for a tri hull but it had a live well and open bow the price was right to good starter boat. I am happy with it so far.

How high is the motor mounted on the transom? You can often get a better ride in any boat by raising the motor. The sweet spot on most boats seems to be the 3rd hole up.

Can you trim the motor while underway? If not, can you manually trim it a little beforehand? You could also try putting a transom wedge between the transom and the motor. Sounds like you need more bow lift. Or transfer more weight to the back of the boat. If trimming the motor increases performance and ride, then CMC sells a motor lift with trim/tilt for big motors.

I know a guy who used to have a tri hull steury. It had a 150 Merc on it, which is a little bigger than your 140, and he had the same problems. He ended up investing in a power tilt/trim, and that seemed to help out. I know they are expensive, but he said it was worth it.

They are nice to fish out of in calm water, but they can get a little rough when it comes to big waves.

Where do you usually boat at?

Thanks for the information. I will live with it I guess that why there a windshield. LOL the kid don’t seem to mind it I think the like getting sprayed. In a couple of years I will upgrade now that I had a big boat I’ll know what to look for in a boat. But for now I’m happy with it. Thanks every one this is a great sight. I mainly go to Echo, Pineview, and Mantua
