FISHING: Good
A solid two months of high winds and high pressure systems hasn’t put too much of a dampening on the backcountry fishing. I’ll start with most recent reports and work myself backwards; Pete Oppenheimer, Ed, and Chris scored over 30 trout with a mix of others species. The previous day Pete and Ed fished with me for a very memorable trip in Whitewater Bay. They scored a total of 3 snook, 30 trout, and over 30 snapper to 15”. Charles Flaitz and Don Peel also fished Whitewater Bay with me two land 2 snook, a 40 pound tarpon, a 19” redfish, and 6 trout. This is what is called a backcountry slam.
In Florida Bay Tony Pope, Mike, and Chris tangled with 4 snook but I will admit we didn’t land them all. These fish were tough! These folks also caught numerous seatrout and the usual Flamingo mixed species including a shark. Taylor Dawson Sr. and Jr. also fished the Bay side with the fly rod and saw many reds and snook on the flats but we had a tough time getting them to stay on the hook with two misses.
The general report on the trout is good to excellent fished on both stages of the tide. Snook have been caught on every trip to inside waters. There are some reds and snook on the flats but the water has been low because of the winds and full moon.
A word on bait is than the shrimp are starting to run small so artificials have been the norm for me lately especially in the deep backcountry.
