SALTWATER FISHING TRENDS

PIERS:

Cherry Grove Pier: Open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Blues are hitting well. An 8-pounder was landed using a Gotcha plug. Spanish mackerel are biting just as well. Jigging with a gold hook seems to be the best method. A few nice black drum and puppy drum (small red drum) are biting shrimp and bloodworms. A nice 24-inch red drum was landed and released. Water temperature is 72 degrees.

Apache Pier (Myrtle Beach): Bait shop open 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Blues are the "fish of the month." A prize will be given for the biggest one caught in May. Blues and black drum are providing the action lately. Two blues were weighed. One at 9 pounds and the other around 14 pounds. The black drum was 11 pounds. All were landed with shrimp. Spanish mackerel are hitting jigged Gotcha plugs. There are plenty to be had. Spotted sea trout and whiting are still biting shrimp and cut bait.

Springmaid Pier: Open 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week, year-round. Nice size Spanish mackerel have been reported as well as blues as big as 24 and 26 inches. Jig with a gold hook for the Spanish. The blues will bite Gotcha plugs or shrimp. Pompano, whiting, small sharks and skates are still biting. Use shrimp or cut bait such as mullet. Water temperature is around 72 degrees.

Myrtle Beach State Park Pier: Open 6 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. A red drum weighing around three pounds was landed from the surf, as well as a 6 pound, 8 ounce black drum. Both were caught on sand fleas. Whiting and blues are biting shrimp and a few dogfish sharks were caught and released.

Surfside Pier: Open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. A nice 4 pound, 14 ounce Spanish mackerel and a 7 pound, 3 ounce blue were weighed. Whiting will bite shrimp or cut bait and flounder like live mud minnows.

The Pier at Garden City: Open 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. King mackerel fishing allowed only during tournaments. Spanish mackerel activity is strong. Jig with gold hooks. Catch limits are easily being made. Blues are running in the two to three pound range. Use shrimp or Gotcha plugs. A few nice whiting and flounder were reported as well. Water temperature is about 72 degrees.

Winyah Bay Fishing and Observation Pier (Georgetown): Open 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, with Free parking and fishing. Freshwater fishing license is required due to brackish water. Visitors also enjoy great bird watching. No report available.

Folly Beach Pier: Open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Water temperature is 72 degrees. A nice Spanish mackerel weighed in at 1 pound, 11 ounces. An 8 pound, 5 ounce blue was also weighed. Use shrimp.

Hunting Island State Park Fishing Pier: Pier open 24 hours a day. The Nature Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday. Whiting are abundant. A few small blues have showed up. Use shrimp. Flounder are also biting live mud minnows. Sharks and skates are still plentiful.

INSHORE (State waters):

Cherry Grove: Flounder fishing is "phenomenal". They are biting live mud minnows in the creeks. Several over four pounds were reported. Cobia have been reported in 50 to 60 foot waters over inshore live bottoms. Use live bait or whole blue crabs. Spadefish are biting jelly balls at nearshore reefs and structures. Red drum and spotted sea trout activity is picking up.

Murrells Inlet: Sheepshead are biting jelly balls at the jetties. You can also use fiddler crabs. Whiting are biting shrimp and cut bait in the surf. Flounder, using mud minnows, and spotted sea trout, using shrimp, are being caught in the inlets.

Charleston Area: Red drum are in the surf, harbor and jetties. Very large fish have been reported at Dynamite Hole and the Grillage, behind Fort Moultrie. Use shrimp. Spotted sea trout activity has slowed. Flounder can be found in the creeks. Look for sandy bottom areas with structures. Use live mud minnows. Blues are starting to show up.

Edisto River/St. Helena Sound: Nice size spotted sea trout and whiting have been reported in the creeks. Some nice ones in the two-pound range have been reported. Use shrimp or cut bait such as mullet.

Beaufort Area: Cobia action in the Broad river is tremendous. A possible state record breaker of 86 and a half pounds was landed using a live eel. Whole squid also works well. Red drum activity has slowed. Flounder are biting live mud minnows at all ocean inlets.

OFFSHORE (Federal Waters):

Cherry Grove: Dolphin have been reported in 100 to 400 feet of water. Areas of activity include the Winyah Scarf, the 600 line and Blackjack Hole. Blackjack Hole is also producing wahoo and yellowfin tuna. Troll with ballyhoo.

Murrells Inlet: Yellow fin tuna, dolphin, wahoo and king mackerel have been reported 60 miles out. Troll with ballyhoo. King mackerel are also being caught 20 miles out. Bottom fishing is producing nice black sea bass and flounder near the 10-mile reef (PA-10). Use cigar minnows.

Charleston Area: A few scattered yellowfin tuna in the 50 to 60 pound range have been reported. Try the Georgetown Hole. Wahoo have been reported at the 226 hole and Edisto Banks. Dolphin (mahi-mahi) are plenty, but small. Troll for all of these using ballyhoo.

Edisto River/St. Helena Sound: Dolphin (mahi-mahi), wahoo and a few tuna have been reported, but details are sketchy. Sea bass are being taken over reefs using cigar minnows and cut bait.

Beaufort Area: Water has been a little rough, but wahoo and a few dolphin (mahi-mahi) were reported at the Deli, 65 miles out. Troll with skirted ballyhoo.
