Alaska Increases Chinook Quota
#1
ANCHORAGE, AK--An Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) review of data utilized under the Pacific Salmon Treaty (PST) for calculating harvest levels for a number of coastal salmon fisheries has resulted in the availability of approximately 10,000 more chinook salmon for the 2004 all gear catch in Southeast Alaska.

Following the initial release of harvest numbers in early April, the ADFG reviewed the data that had been submitted to the PST Chinook Technical Committee. The ADFG says that review identified an error in reporting by the state of Oregon of the 2003 returns of a number Oregon coastal chinook stocks. When notified, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife submitted the correct data, and the committee updated their calculations.

With the corrected data, the 2004 Southeast Alaska all gear catch level for chinook covered by the Pacific Salmon Treaty is 383,536, which is up from the 373,870 announced earlier. The chinook catch is allocated among sport and commercial fisheries according to management plans established by the Alaska Board of Fisheries.
