SALTWATER FISHING TRENDS May 24, 2004

PIERS:

Cherry Grove Pier: Open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Four king mackerel were caught by floating live menhaden. Whiting are biting extremely well. Most are caught on live or cut shrimp. Blues and Spanish mackerel are also hitting well on Gotcha plugs and gold spoons. Several nice black drum and puppy drum (small red drum) are biting shrimp and bloodworms. A few small trout were landed and released using live shrimp. Water temperature is 73 degrees.

Apache Pier (Myrtle Beach): Bait shop open 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Blues are the "fish of the month." A prize will be given for the biggest blue caught in May. Flounders and blues are providing good action for anglers this week. Several flounders that were landed measured over 19 inches. Black drum are biting well with one weighing in at 14 pounds; most were landed with shrimp. Spanish mackerel are hitting jigged Gotcha plugs -- there are plenty to be had. A few spotted sea trout, red drum and whiting are still biting shrimp and cut bait. Water temperature is 74 degrees.

Springmaid Pier: Open 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week, year-round. Blues are biting well. Several blues were in the 8-10 pound range and were landed by floating live bait. The smaller blues will bite Gotcha plugs or shrimp. Nice size Spanish mackerel have been reported as well -- jig with a gold spoon for the Spanish. A few whiting were caught using shrimp or cut bait such as mullet. Water temperature is around 71 degrees.

Myrtle Beach State Park Pier: Open 6 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Whiting are biting well, and many were caught on sand fleas. A few nice red drum were landed using live shrimp. Blues are biting shrimp and Gotcha plugs.

Surfside Pier: Open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Spanish mackerel are biting well, most have been caught on floating rigs. Whiting and pompano will bite shrimp or cut bait. A few small flounder were landed and released, and most were caught using live shrimp or mud minnows.

The Pier at Garden City: Open 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. King mackerel fishing allowed only during tournaments. Spanish mackerel and blues are biting well using jigs with gold hooks. Blues are running in the one- to two-pound range. Use shrimp or Gotcha plugs for blues. Pompano are biting well on shrimp and bloodworms. Several small flounder were landed and released. A few whiting were reported as well. Water temperature is about 74 degrees.

Winyah Bay Fishing and Observation Pier (Georgetown): Open 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, with free parking and fishing. A Freshwater Fishing License is required due to brackish water. Visitors also enjoy great bird watching. No report available.

Folly Beach Pier: Open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fishing has been outstanding. An 18-pound king mackerel was landed this week. Blues are abundant with many measuring 14-16 inches. Most were caught using Gotcha plugs. Several Spanish mackerel are being caught. Black drum weighing 4-5 pounds are being caught in the shallows. Several pompano and permit are also being caught using shrimp and bloodworms. The water visibility has been great this week. Water temperature is 75 degrees.

Hunting Island State Park Fishing Pier: Pier open 24 hours a day. The Nature Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday. Flounder are biting very well using live mud minnows or cut shrimp as bait. A few small blues and whiting are biting using shrimp as bait.
