Howdy everyone,
It's been a while since I've posted a message. Anyway, I have made it a goal to catch a walleye this year. However, I fish from shore and want to know if anyone has had success catching walleye from the shore in northern utah. I went to Holmes Creek Resv. yesterday but was not having any luck fishing deep. I had read that a few anglers were having success out there for eyes.
I eventually went for bass. I switched two a hopper popper and caught some bass where the trees touched the water. Any info than can help be catch an eye from the shore would be greatly appreciated.

My little brother caught a beautiful 20" walleye from the north dike on Willard Bay. He caught it at about 11:30 at night on a silver and black rapala. He was as surprised as we were when he hauled it up. From what I understand walleyes tend to move closer to shore at night to feed on the shad. It might be worth a try.

This time of year, stick to cranks. Longer ones that "wobble" seem to work better for Walleye than the short ones that "wiggle". I hope that makes sense, since I usually don't. Clown, Perch, and Fire Tiger are popular colors. I like blue/silver or charcoal grey in murky or stained water. Wally Divers and lures that are shaped similar can be cast quite a distance from the shore. Just match the lure to the depth. Try to buy lures that will just "tick" along the bottom, not dig in hard.
Later on in the year, if there are Crawdads in the water you are fishing, the dads will get softer shelled as they are growing. The walleye take advantage of this and move up shallow to feed on them, and minnows. That is when I switch tactics and use a floating jig head.
Rig it like you would a slip sinker rig (Carolina Rig) for floating bait off the bottom. Place a sliding sinker on the main line. Tie off a snap, swivel, bead, or whatever is your choice to keep the sinker on the line and able to slide. Add a leader of no more than 8lb. test (4 or 6 preferred) at a length of 1 to 2 feet. Tie on a black or red floating jig head tipped with a worm.
Cast around the rocky areas and you can either just bait fish and let it sit there, or give it a little action and pull it along as a carolina rig. I will admit that I have not tried this anywhere but Starvation, under the bridge, in late July to mid August. But it works like a charm here, then.
Hope it helps. Good luck out there.
