[#000000]AUSTIN, TX—The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is proposing a new program that will allow managers of private ponds and lakes to be issued permits to control fish-eating double-crested cormorant. [/#000000]

[#000000]Federal biologists estimate 2 million double-crested cormorants inhabit the U.S., mostly breeding in Canada and the Great Lakes, making it the most abundant of six cormorant species in North America. The birds eat mainly fish, up to a pound per day.[/#000000]

[#000000]Twenty-four states already allow cormorant control. If the proposal passes in Texas, the TPWD estimates there may be around 2,000 cormorant-control permits issued in there in the first year alone.[/#000000]
