Striper Report--Cape Flats June 2.2002
#1
BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE- Stripers 6/2/02

Light-tackle and fly fishing for striped bass is gang-busters in Boston Harbor and the South Shore. Reported earlier in the week, Two groups from MA had great trips in Boston Harbor fly fishing with chartresuse Half & Halfs for school and keeper bass up to 35 inches.

On Saturday, Yours truly and son Mike junior had the opportunity to do some sight-fishing for bass on the flats of the Cape with Tom Keer, Regional Sales Rep. of the Orvis Co. Employing some of the techniques and flies originated by Kenny Abrames from Rhode Island, we hooked and landed numerous bass between 20 and 27 inches. Kenny Abrames’ book, Striper Moon,(www.stripermoon.com) is a great read and a wealth of information to add to any flyfisher’s bag of tricks. Abrames’ thoughtful application of techniques employed in Altantic Salmon and steelhead fishing to striped bass fishing is innovative and extremely effective. His insight, keen observations and attention to detail
serve as a bench-mark for aspiring saltwater flyfisherman. Kenney’s patterns are now available through the Orvis Co.

Mike jr. landed the first keeper of 30 inches. Abrame’s flat-wing “Sure-Thing” size 3/0 accounted for the best bass of the day. The 40 inch, 20-pound trophy was hooked in 2 ½ feet of water using a floating Wonderline.

Capt. Mike Bartlett
B-Fast Charters
www.bfastcharters.com

Capt.
