planerboard release
#1
hey guys

i had an idea for my planer boards that im curious if anyone else

has tried or would like to

i originally ran them the way they came with two releases but got tired of

chaseing them all over the lake every time a half decent fish would hit,

so i tried replacing the back release with a swivelsnap that worked ok but

the board would slide down the line and hit fish in the face and its a pain

trying to take the snap off the line while trying not to lose the fish.

well what im doing now is replacing the back release with a release from a

snap weight (the kind with the post in the middle) , sunday i got to test it on

a four pound wiper at willard it worked great the board stayed on the line,

it didnt slide down the line (even with fireline) and its easy to remove the

board .

if any body has tried this or has a better plan let me know

I use planer boards from church tackle...they have a different release setup....but if it comes off, it slaps the fish in the face, unless you have a length of leader and a swivel.

Try putting on a split shot sinker three or four feet before your lure this shoud stop the board from hitting the fish.

Using a snap swivel for the rear release is pretty common, but as was said the information that accompanies that piece of advice is to place a bead (locking bead or a bead in front of a swivel) above the lure.

Offshore Tackle makes a variety of releases. The standard black releases are fine for mono, but for superlines like Fireline, you need to upgrade to the red OR-30 releases--and I still double-wrap using those releases. They also make the OR-18 Snapper release which has a pin through the pads. This doesn't prevent the board from slipping (you still need the right tension), but it does prevent the board from coming free from the line requiring that you chase it down. The OR-18 has a variable tension so you can crank it down for superlines.
