Oregon Fishing Update
#1
Fisheries Update

July 12th - July 18th, 2002

Sturgeon fishing is hot and cold in the estuary. It was at its best late last week but after the holiday weekend, the fish seem to be a bit shy as most guides have to work hard to hang their limits. Sculpin and crabs have become a real nuisance for anglers working out of Hammond and the deeper water out of Tongue Point. Oversize fishing remains steady in the gorge with floater shad the best bait.

The water from Beacon Rock to the deadline at Bonneville opens up on 7/16. ODF&W says over 1,000 fin-clipped summer chinook have been taken in the "bonus fishery" thus far. It stays open until the end of the month. Steelhead fishing is fair as well but should improve with the current tide series.

Decent ocean results for chinook and coho is reported near the CR Buoy out of Astoria. You just have to fish a little deeper for the chinooks and the earlier the better for hungry fish. Offshore salmon fishing on the central and Oregon coast is outstanding. Mid-Willamette steelheaders are catching fish below Dexter Dam. The Clackamas River is holding up well but the Sandy is having visibility problems due to glacial runoff. The Santiam systems are coming into their prime for summer steelhead; most of the chinook present are coloring up. The Nestucca, Wilson and Siletz River offer some very good steelheading with the right technique at the right time.

Deschutes fly fishermen are taking redsides and large whitefish on nymphs and though there are a few steelhead in the lower river, it's early to actively pursue them. Offshore salmon fishing on the central and Oregon coast is outstanding.

Trout will be stocked this week at Collins Lake, Estacada Lake, Faraday Lake, North Fork Reservoir, Small Fry Lake, Trillium Lake, Big Cliff Reservoir, Breitenbush River, Clear Lake, Detroit Reservoir, Leaburg Lake, upper and lower McKenzie River, Mid Fork Willamette River, Salt Creek and the North Fork Santiam River.

Have this report e-mailed to you weekly or sign up for our full version with tips, forecasts, and professional guide's advice!
http://www.TheGuidesForecast.com/

Get more Oregon fishing information at
http://www.theguidesforecast.com
