Boston Harbor & South Shore-Striper-7/13/02

BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE- Stripers 7/13/02

Just returned from the Hawke River in Labrador. Given the conditions—low water and ice still in Hawk Bay until three day before our trip---we had awesome fishing. 71 degree water, 100 degree temps and no rain for weeks made for a tough first two days of fishing. Nevertheless, we hiked to the falls pools and found the “Gold Mine” was loaded with salmon waiting for rain as we were. Catch and release limit of 4 grilse each was the results. The rain came on Wednesday bringing in the fresh run of fish. Four anglers released 60 grilse/salmon in 6+ days of fishing. The best salmon of the week was, of course, caught by a rookie on his first salmon trip-- 40 ½ inches long and 25 pounds.
Six salmon were landed –25, (3) 15, (2) 12 and 9 pounds, respectively. An equal number were lost including two estimated in the low twenty pound class. All the fish had sea-lice and were caught on 4 or 6 glitter green-butts tied low-water on partridge hooks and fished with the “hitch”.

Through the past week Capt. Tom on the BAY FLY found the bass in Quincy Bay and the inner-harbor off Boston. The anchorage in Boston produced some spectacular surface action for Joe Donsky of Seattle, Washington. Joe is the Orvis regional sales manager in that area. The bass were feeding on small herring and Capt. Tom’s black and white herring pattern worked well to match the hatch. Most bass were in the 20- 27 inch size class. Two keeper bass in the low thirty- inch class took the same pattern while fishing the flats in Quincy Bay. The ledges off Cohasset have been sporadically producing some bigger fish. Rich Galddy’s(Plymouth, MA) friend and client Pete had a good day Friday,
After the action slowed in Boston, We moved to Minot’s Ledge. Pete’s best bass as a 36”, 17 pound keeper covered with sea-lice.

Capt. Mike Bartlett
B-Fast Charters
www.bfastcharters.com

Capt.
