Oregon Fishing Update
#1
Fisheries Update

August 2nd - August 8th, 2002

A relatively slow reporting week for most areas but that is soon to change. Ocean salmon fishing is the only thing going out of Astoria and the weather has been so rough as of late, it hasn't been fun for those going out. The NW wind has been kicking some butt from early morning and the jellyfish have been very bad. Although limits are still quire frequent, many anglers are not testing their luck out of this port due to the poor fishing conditions.

A few nice chinook are still in the catch so let's hope the Buoy 10 opener will be as good as we anticipate. (We may get a late report in). Sturgeon fishing for keepers in not an option for most of the Columbia River but the oversize show is still going strong for those anglers fishing floater shad above Beacon Rock. The steelhead and salmon show is less than impressive and most attribute it to warmer water conditions. Get down to that estuary where the colder water is (and likely the jellyfish too).

Steelhead and a few chinook continue to be taken upriver in the Columbia by anglers fishing the right place at the right time. Fishing is slow at the mouth of the Deschutes, better upstream. Low clear coastal streams still offer steelhead opportunities to stealthy anglers.

The Clackamas River is low, warm and slow. Sandy River reports indicate it's still suffering from glacial runoff. The North Santiam is a prime location for steelie action. Chinook have entered Nehalem Bay with anglers taking fish at Wheeler on trolled herring and spinners. The chinook fishery at Coquille and Coos Bay is just starting up.

Largemouth bass are cooperating with anglers fishing surface lures at first and last light in lakes. Green Peter and Crescent Lake are providing some good kokanee fishing to trollers plying the correct depths.

Trout will be stocked this week in Breitenbush, Upper McKenzie and North Fork Santiam Rivers, Leaburg Lake, Detroit and Trail Bridge Reservoirs and Quartzville Creek.

Have this report e-mailed to you weekly or sign up for our full version with tips, forecasts, and professional guide's advice!
http://www.TheGuidesForecast.com/

Get more Oregon fishing information at
http://www.theguidesforecast.com
