Boston Harbor & South Shore Striper-8/10/02
#1
BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE- Stripers 8/10/02

Early in the week a mix of both bass and blues were in the upper reaches of Quincy Bay. Dean Sylvester and his sons, Evan and Dean (Matt) had a great day on Sunday using surface presentations. Sliders and gurglers worked well on the Long Rods and white slug-gos brought great surface strikes fished on light-spinning gear. 4 keepers were tallied (36”, 33”, 31” and 29”) in the early morning. Chartreuse Half & Half were also effective when the surface feeding quit. Numerous small blues as well as one big blue of 12 pounds were mixed in with the bass.

Later in the week, after the two-day NE-NW blow, it was all blues in the bay. Bob Barlow’s ( Marshfield, MA) first cast on Friday produced a 10-pound blue. As dawn broke, a large school of blues erupted on the flats is 5 feet of water. Gurglers and small poppers worked on the surface as did Chartreuses Half & Halfs fished down with DepthCharge line. Knot-tying stainless-steel leader material prevented cut-off from the blues.

Long-time client Roger Thuot’s third trip to Boston was off to a very slow start on Saturday. With no surface activity in the inner or outer harbor in the early morning, we were relegated to fish the rocks outside. Roger usually hosts is daughter or son-in-law Rob Whitney on his trips. These central Mass. Residents (Princeton), always bring the luck with them, even on the slow days. Rob’s first cast into the incoming tide wash off Grave’s Light resulted in a 32” keeper—his first. Both Roger and Rob took bass between 24” and 27” as well as one other keeper of 28” on Half & Half’s and Smelt color Fin-S rubber-baits cast into the wash. Later in the tide, the blues showed briefly off Long Island to round out the day.

Fishing the ledges off Cohasset has been slow during this week. Blues are showing off outer-Minot’s. Tube & worm trollers have taken a few fish in the 38-40” size class.

Capt. Mike Bartlett
B-Fast Charters
www.bfastcharters.com

Capt.
