Oregon Fishing Update
#1
Fisheries Update

August 16th - August 22nd, 2002

Just as predicted, THE CHINOOK ARE IN! They made their strong showing on the last day I predicted they would (8/14). Action was great on this day and should only get better as the season wears on. Most of the fish came from above the bridge on the Washington side with very few boats fishing the Oregon side. Be sure to check out the long version of TGF for a great deal more info on this hot fishery!

The ocean fishery is less than impressive with most guides coming back short their limits of fin-clipped coho on 8/13. Most anglers were heading south but north produced fair results for most of the week. Crabbing is still poor in the estuary of the Columbia. Steelhead fishing is also slow unless you target the mouth of a cool water tributary in the mainstem. Next to no one is sturgeon fishing so reports are scarce. Why waste your time? Go chinook fishing!

Nehalem Bay has turned on with chinook being caught at Wheeler. The steelhead in residence on the Wilson and Nestucca Rivers are holding in warm, low, clear water and are not cooperating with anglers. The Clackamas remains warm and slow. Sandy River anglers are finding some steelhead.

The North Santiam remains the premier destination for those who'd like catch a chrome steelie. Try above Stayton. Rock and jetty fishing has been productive around Newport. Herring and crab are being taken in Yaquina bay. Early Fall chinook have started entering the Rogue River.

Smallmouth bass fishing continues to be excellent on the Umpqua with larger fish showing in the catch. Paulna and Green Peter are producing kokanee. Estacada Lake and Faraday Lake are schedule to be stocked this week with legal rainbow trout. Several hundred summer steelhead have been recycled from North Fork Trap to Faraday Lake.

Have this report e-mailed to you weekly or sign up for our full version with tips, forecasts, and professional guide's advice!
http://www.TheGuidesForecast.com/

Get more Oregon fishing information at
http://www.theguidesforecast.com
