TROUT
Rivers & streams - Last week’s rains made trout fishing difficult in many areas. As fall approaches, hatches dwindle and anglers should consider switching over to streamers and terrestrial fly patterns for better action. Anglers should expect excellent late summer fishing on the Farmington River, with 4800 trout recently stocked into the West Branch and mainstem. Areas stocked were the Hogback Dam to West Branch TMA reach, the West Branch TMA, and the Farmington River TMA. Late this week, 600 “survivor” strain browns will also be stocked into the two TMAs. The Farmington River is 65 °F. Flows should be around 290 cfs (at Riverton), although there was a mid-week reduction in flows for DEP’s annual electrofishing survey which may temporarily affect fishing. Hatches are typical for late summer. The bugs consist of Isonychia (#12-14, fast water, evening), tiny Rusty Spinners (#22-26), Blue Wing Olives (#16-20, mid-late afternoon), Caddis (tan #14-18, all day; green #22-26, evening; summer pupa #18-20 morning), Midges (#22-32, morning), Black Ants (#14-20, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#16-18, mid day), Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid), Stone Hopper (#8-12, mid day) and Golden Drake (Potomanthus, #10-14, late evening) are successful patterns. The Housatonic River is 65°F with about 800 cfs of clearing flows. Insect hatches include: Blue Wing Olive (#18-22, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Isonychia (#12-14 evening, September is peak month), Rusty Spinner (#10-24), Light Cahill (#12-16, evening), and Black caddis (#16-18, early morning & evening). Golden stonefly nymphs hatch at first light and adults egg-lay after dark. Try Black/Cinnamon Ants (#18-22, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#14-18, mid day), Stone Hopper (#8-10, mid day) and Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid, September is peak month). Don’t forget streamers (morning & evening). Patterns to try include: White, Wooly Buggers, Muddlers, Micky Finn, Grey or Black Ghosts (#4-10). Areas of best reported trout activity: Pootatuck, Farmington (13 fish for one angler) and Housatonic Rivers. Sandy Brook, East Branch Salmon Brook and the Stratton Brook Trout Park have been recently stocked and should also provide good fishing.
Lakes & Ponds Some lakes are still producing good trout fishing. Areas of activity include: Crystal (Ellington), East Twin (football size browns) and Highland Lakes, Beach Pond and West Hill Pond (16” brown).
NORTHERN PIKE fishing is reported to be very good. Bigger fish are showing up with the cooler temperatures in Mansfield Hollow Reservoir, Bantam Lake and Winchester Lake (a new hot spot). Some WALLEYE action continues to be reported from Saugatuck Reservoir and Squantz Pond. Good fishing for YELLOW PERCH reported from Crescent (Southington), Candlewood (40 JUMBOS) and Tyler Lakes. KOKANEE are being taken from West Hill Pond at night (around 45 feet) on corn/meal worms. SUNFISH are providing early fall action throughout the state. Use worms, grubs, jigs or small poppers on fly rods for them. Areas to try include: Halls, Billings, Dog and Hatch Ponds, Crescent Lake and Mamanasco Lake.
Connecticut RiverNORTHERN PIKE fishing is reported as good-very good. Pike have been found from Windsor Locks (34”, 7.5 lbs.), Chapman’s Cove, Middletown (29-34”) to Salmon River Cove. Big early fall CATFISH (10-12 lbs. at dusk) are being taken on cut bait (chunking) in the deeper holes of the river. BLACK CRAPPIE fishing is reported as excellent on small shiners in the back coves of the river. LARGEMOUTH BASS (coves from Hartford to Middletown and in the lower river) and SMALLMOUTH BASS (Enfield/Windsor Locks area) fishing is good. STRIPED BASS action in the lower river is starting to pick up as the hickory shad move up river.

[Image: bluefish.gif]BLUEFISH fishing remains excellent throughout LIS. Bluefish can been seen slashing bait at the surface during any time of the day. This is prime time for anglers fishing from shore. Connecticut’s coastal state parks are worth investigating as these marauding fish trap bunker (menhaden) along the beaches during feeding frenzies. Bluefish sizes are a mixed bag with most ranging in weight from 2-10 lbs. Other bluefish spots include the reefs off Watch Hill, Ram Island Reef, the Race, Millstone warm water discharge, Connecticut River mouth, Long Sand Shoal, Sixmile Reef, Crane Reef, Falkner Island area (North Rip), New Haven Harbor, Charles Island area to Stratford Point, Penfield Reef, Norwalk Islands, and especially Stamford and Greenwich Harbors.
STRIPED BASS – Fishing for striped bass has dropped off due to the overwhelming number of bluefish. The usual striper haunts include the Watch Hill reefs, south shore of Fishers Island, the Race (Valiant Rock), the Sluiceway (area between Plum Island and Great Gull Island), the hump south of Bartlett Reef, Black Point, the humps south of Hatchett Reef, Long Sand Shoal, Cornfield Point, Southwest Reef, Sixmile Reef, the reefs off Branford, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground area, and the reefs around the Norwalk Islands.
SUMMER FLOUNDER fishing is in general winding down. However, a good size doormat can still be taken as these fish start to migrate offshore. Fluke spots includes the mouth of the Mystic River to Groton Long Point, the hump south of Bartlett Reef, Black Point area, deeper water south of Long Sand Shoal, and the Falkner Island area. [#ff0000]Remember, the summer flounder fishing season in New York is closed.[/#ff0000]
SCUP fishing is fair to good but you may have to work for them by moving around. Most of the major rocky reefs throughout LIS will hold these fun gamesters on light tackle.
HICKORY SHAD fishing remains fair to good in the Niantic River.
ATLANTIC BONITO are off the Watch Hill Reefs, the Pine Island area (Groton), the Race, and the Millstone Point area.
LITTLE TUNNY (False Albacore) fishing has taken off with fish being reported in the Sluiceway, Pine Island area, Bartlett Reef, and Millstone Point to Black Point.
