WILLARD BAY 9-26
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Met Petty at Smith & Edwards at 6:50 AM. He passed the first "fishing buddy test". We were supposed to meet at 7 and he was early. It was time to launch his new Fish Cat 4, which he named "Whistler's Mother". I'll leave it to him to explain the significance.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We drove all the way around to the light pole, with the idea that we would have the best chance of finding some wipers there. Bad thinking. First, the rocks on the dike were too imposing for a tubing newbie. Second, the mosquitoes zeroed in on Petty's bare arms and legs with a vengeance. I think he lost 10 pounds before we launched.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We fought our way back over the cratered road to the southwest corner, where the pump maintainence road over the dike makes for easier tube trudging. Bugs were not nearly so bad and we got everything loaded up and over the dike to the water. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Unfortunately, the water was ugly. It wasn't quite chocolate, but definitely too turbid for sight feeders like wipers to be very active. It was also 62 degrees, which is a few degrees below optimum for wipers, but getting okey dokey for walleyes. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We got Petty's new craft set up and launched with only a few minor glitches on both of our parts. What's a trip without a few aggravations? (much better).[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We split up and began casting all kinds of lures. Nada, zip, zip. Saw quite a few marks on the sonar, and I doubt they were all carp. By the way, one of the pics is titled "rising browns". There were bazillions of carp all over the surface. There were also dozens of grebes diving for their dinner, but I didn't see any return to the top with any fish in their beaks.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We decided that maybe the cool and cloudy water called for bait fishing. Petty pinned on a crawler and I dug out some leftover perchie fillets from yesterday's jaunt at Lincoln Beach. Petty had a fish on and lost it. Soon afterward, I did the same thing. Looked like we were going to be snakebit.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]On my next bite, I did the feeding line trick and set the hook only after letting the fish move off with the perch meat for a ways. Solid hookset into a small channel cat. It was about 13" and chubby so I kept it, hoping for a few like it. They are great eating that size and there ain't many bigger ones left in Willard.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]After I had caught a couple more, and had more missed bites, I connected with Petty and downloaded some of my remaining perch strips, and some of my ring-eye hooks. Wasn't long before he bent his stick and beat up on a few bitty kitties himself. We both agreed it beat the heck out of catching nothing.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]At one point in my kicking around and watching the sonar, I had a screen full of large marks, from the surface to the bottom, in 8 feet of water. I guessed wipers and switched to tossing a hot red roadrunner head with a chartreuse plastic twister. After quite a few unmolested casts, I had a hard whack and about 10 yards of line disappeared from my reel before the inexperienced fish forgot how to hang on and lost me. That was a highlight, but hardly a banner event.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Kept a few little cats for TubeBabe's scampi pan and got off the water by noon. Water temp had climbed to almost 64, but was still pretty sick looking. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We cruised by the south marina to see if there was any water coming in the inlet. Nope. Ranger said he understood that the Weber water users would not release any, and that the pumps would still keep going until October 15. Bad combination. Hope we get some serious runoff this year.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fun day on the water with Petty. He is good company and handled Whistler's Mother like a pro, once he figured out the difference between port and starboard.[/#0000ff]

it was great to finally fish with the infamous one[Wink], and a real tubin pro. i really enjoyed fishing out of "whistlers mother" not quite ready to trade in the "swamp yankee" yet but i can get my feet wet in this one for awhile and can fish easyer alone and other tubers. the kitties i caught where alot of fun and put up a good fight. still need to ad the sonar to the tube and a few more bells and whistles.

hey guys. as much as i wanted to fish with ya my memory of a few nights ago got the best of me. not to mention the lingering bites on my legs too. i sure would like to hook up sometime with you guys but i think my willard adventures are done for the year. i use to annihilate the wipers all the way up through october but this year seems to be like last year again. i dont undestand weber basin holding all the water as the ogden and weber run at high water and almost 100 percent is diverted into the canal while we are basically out of irrigation season. it seems money does talk and there is absolute intention on draining that dang lake. cool pics hope to get with ya guys next time. maybe jordanelle?

[cool][#0000ff]Hey, X, let's see if we can get a group over to Starvation. I'm out for next week and the week of the 23'rd. Anybody for the 16th of October (Saturday)?[/#0000ff]

the 16th might work for me. i have alot of trips to wyoming and idaho in october so i have to see how this all pans out. are you thinking knight hollow area? thats the only place i know to launch a tube and have a good area to fish without kicking clear across the lake.

[cool][#0000ff]I haven't even seen Starvation for over 20 years. I fished it in the past near the dam and at Rabbit Gulch. I am the wrong guy to do the planning.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I suggest we PM Curtisfish or Kayote over there and either get them to provide a guided tour, or at least give us the best current info.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Looks like we both have full dance cards, so if it is doable, let's get it on the calendar and hope for decent weather.[/#0000ff]

Thanks for the report Pat, it's the first I've heard from Willard in a while. Those cats a finally starting to grow again, we caught few over 7 or 8 inches last year but this year we have caught a lot in the 13 inch range. If this trend continues by next year there should be some nice cats in Willard again. That water has been murky for a while now, the more the wind blows the worse it gets. After a day of no wind it clears up a little but because the water is so low it doesn't take much to stir it up again. WH2

[cool][#0000ff]I have caught channel cats every month of the year in Utah, even through the ice. Of course, as most serious cat chasers realize, they are more active in warmer water. But, with smaller baits and the right presentation, they will bite sporadically all year.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you go to Willard, the small cats respond well to a half crawler either suspended off the bottom with a dropper rig, or dragged and lifted behind a float tube. And, don't be surprised if a walleye or wiper accepts the bait too. I was using small strips of fish meat. That is always a good bet. I added a couple drops of shad oil if I hadn't got a bite for a few minutes.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Although most of the cats you get from Willard these days are the bitty kitties, there are still numbers of larger fish. You just have to be good...and lucky (good and lucky). [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you go to the southwest corner, the fish were scattered all over the place. We got them in water anywhere from 8 feet deep to as shallow as 3 or 4 feet, after the sun warmed the water by midday. Just move slow and stop once in awhile to allow the chilled kitties a chance to catch up with the smell you trail behind your bait.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As I mentioned, it is good to fish with the bail open on a spinning reel and the line hooked over a finger. At the first tap, let the line go a few feet and then tighten up before setting the hook. Sometimes they pick it up and drop it, and don't come back. Other times they "gulp and go". It's a guessing game, but part of the fun.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Good luck. Hope the nice weather holds for ya.[/#0000ff]

Nice report. It's a good thing that the cats love to eat just about everything. Wink I still haven't had the opportunity to fish Willard, I suppose I will in the colder part of October.

Sorry Td, my current info on Starvation isn't very current. I lost the lower unit ot my main motor and haven't ventured out on Starvation with just the trolling motors. A 6h.p. gas or a 26lb. electric on a 16' boat doesn't get me off the water fast enough in a storm. I should have the 90h.p. fixed relatively soon.

We did catch a few (5) Wascally Wallys from shore a few weeks ago, after dark (10:00-12:30), just South of the SLC side of the bridge. If you can imagine, they were hitting anything that had a spinner on it (Whistler Jigs, Mepps, Road Runners) and tipped with a chunk of Crawler.

I'll ask around and see what I can find out for you. If I can find a puddle jumper to borrow, I'll meet you out there for a day or two of fun.

The sunken? island by the dam is still a nice place to fish. The sandbar over by there has been pretty good in the last few years too. The point at Rabbit Gultch is still my favorite for numbers.

[cool][blue]Yo dude, ain't you heard there is more than one way to skin a cat? There's also more than one way to cook and eat 'em. The big boys I cut into finger strips and make up "kittie krispies". The smaller and thinner fillets are great when done "scampi style"...cooked in garlic butter. [/blue]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I also broil them, bake them and mix them into chili recipes. Big cat fillets are great smoked, almost to jerky dryness, and then thin sliced and served with cheese and crackers.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Heck, I could chow down on catfish several nights a week and not complain. Only way I don't think I would like catfish is "sushi" style. Catfish needs to be cooked, but once cooked it is great.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But, I could eat walleye twice as often, even sushi. The best way to serve walleye is almost any way at all. Agreed?[/#0000ff]
