Toxic Algae In Three Minnesota Lakes

ST. PAUL, MN—The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released a warning last week that people, pets and livestock should not enter or drink the waters of three Minnesota lakes where toxic algae blooms have recently occurred. These include Lake Benton in Lincoln County, Fish Lake in Kanabec County and Lake Crystal in Blue Earth County.

Officials say swimming in the lakes could cause a skin rash, hives, runny nose, irritated eyes and throat irritation. Ingesting the water may cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, headaches, throat irritation, muscle pain, paralysis, respiratory failure and even death.

If contact occurs, officials say the water and algae should be washed off; if an animal contacts the algae, contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.
