Willow Pond report (10/24/04)
#1
I fished Willow Pond today for about a hour (9-10am) . I was just casting a Mepps spinner. Missed a few hit's but I caught 1 beefy 18" Cutt over by the trees On the other side of the pond. What pissed me off was the guy's on the other side of the pond yelling at me to let it go. I follow all the rule's where ever I fish. When is it any one's business but my own what I keep and what I let go. I did let it go. I C&R 95 percent of what I catch any way. I thought it was just rude. Did any one else have that happen to them over there.

No but from what i have read about catch and release says that most trout die anyways if you release them so why not keep them

Screw them!!! I'm sure they were the "regulars" who keep more than thier fair share. I see so much poaching at that pond its unreal!!! Spoke to a Conservation officer who happened to show up one day to check licenses and he didn't seem to care.

Never had that happen to me but I did get a lecture once from one of the older gentlemen that fishes there on catch and release. Gave me a good laugh since I hardly ever keep any. The funny thing is every time I go there I see this same senior with a stringer full.

Last week some moron let the air out of one of my tires. Jealousy I guess since I caught and released 6 or 7 cutts within an hour.

I also heard of one of the regulars that would order people of the dock if they caught a few. Never acually saw it but I can imagine it happening.

I find it funny that this happened to you since I usually get nasty looks for releasing fish. Lots of the time someone will aproach me and ask for them "since you don't want them" like it's a sin or something, LOL.

Don't let rude people stop you from enjoying yourself. Thats a great place to wind down for an hour or two even if some believe they own the place.

Sadly, I'm not at all surprised. Everyone should feel free to act as they wish, within legal and ethical limits, after all, it's "supposedly" a free country. However, there are always certain groups of people and individuals that feel they must engage in what I would term as value imperialism. Some of you might be familiar with the term cultural imperialism, this notion rests upon the idea that western cultural artifacts such as movies, television, etc are introduced to foreign countries where the indigenous culture is erased through westernization. Now what I mean by value imperialism is that certain individuals are always attempting to impose their values upon others with little or no respect to differing values, beliefs, and attitudes. Often, lack of respect for different attitudes leads to an overt condescension and outright contempt for others. What you're noticing is an extension on traditional structures of domination. In this case it's not discrimination based on race, class or gender, but it's prejudice and discrimination based on an attitude toward fishing. It must be noted however that certain ethnic groups are often falsely labeled as poachers by some C&R folk. Catch and release fishers should be respected for their values, however, they need to also have respect for differing ideologies. In reality this is never the case. Yes, unfortunately, prejudice and discrimination are very much alive and well in Utah and everywhere else. However most people either do not realize it or are unwilling to acknowledge its prescence in comtemporary society. But this shared experience by Tincanfish helps to exemplify the existence of this problem in society. Hopefully, by recognizing and identifying the problem, we can begin to solve it.

thats interesting given the location it was caught. willow pond. a urban fishery stricly for put and take purposes. seems a group of regulars speaking out of selfish intentions, purhaps hoping to catch the same fish another day for themselves. why would cutts be put in a urban fishery? so little kids and the like have a chance at a bigger fish with a relative amount of ease. i almost would have kept it just to spite the people across the way personally. and i havent kept a fish in probably 6 years. minus some perchies in places they dont belong.

Hmmm... This experience fits in perfectly with your thesis. How about the deflation of my tire? What Sociological inadequacies could explain that?[unsure]

Well, some people try and impose their values on us.What those people you encountered didn't seem to know is that at times,it is appropriate to keep fish.Willow pond is a "put and take" fishery.I don't keep fish very often, but feel no guilt when I do keep one.Catch and release is most of my fishing, but I don't have to much use for C&R Fascist.LOL Hope I'm not in to much trouble with the C&R crowd.[Smile]There are some waters where it is not appropriate to keep fish,Provo river, some mountain streams,ETC

The deflation of your tire scares me. I didn't realize the crazy idiots were that bold and mean to deflate a tire in daylight with so many people over there. My explanation for that is simple......DEVIANT BEHAVIOR and CRIMINAL VANDALISM. By the way I noticed a murray police vehicle driving around in the parking lot several times. It might be good for you to let him/her know about the incident so they can keep their eyes open. I would be sure to call the police if I saw anything like this going on.

By the way Xman, I completely agree, even if I never keep fish I would definitely have kept that cutt, and maybe even hung it up on a tree limb just to piss those rude idiots off. .......then again, I don't want to have my tires deflated.

There weren't many people at the pond that day. It was cold and early morning. Bold is the word, it must take a good 5 min. to totally deflate a tire. The hissing sound alone must make the prospect difficult. Well... It could have been worst. Now I know why Craig parks his vehicle at the back end of the lot in the open.
