DEP Announces New Marine Recreational Fishery Management Measures For Cod And Haddock
The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced the adoption of new fishery management measures for the recreational fishery for cod and haddock. The minimum length for cod is being reduced from 23 inches to 22 inches and the minimum length for haddock is being reduced from 23 inches to 19 inches. Previously, cod and haddock had an aggregate creel limit of 10 fish. Under the newly adopted rules, the creel limit for cod is 10 fish and the creel limit for haddock is eliminated. These changes will become effective December 17, 2004.
“The haddock stocks are rebuilding rapidly and commercial fishery restrictions have been eased. The New England Fishery Management Council wanted to provide the same increased opportunities to recreational fishermen”, said Eric M. Smith, Acting Director of the DEP's Marine Fisheries Division. “The cod measures were adopted to conform with the rules for federal waters where the fishery occurs.”
On October 14, 2004, a public hearing was held to receive comment on proposed final regulations regarding these and other changes. However, because of procedural constraints, it is not possible for the final regulations to be formally adopted before the end of February. The Department is adopting these interim limits using its regulatory authority to adjust, by declaration, closed seasons, length limits, and creel limits to maintain compliance with the provisions of fishery management plans adopted by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission or the U. S. Department of Commerce.
