The inner-harbor fishing turned on at the beginning of the last week and has continued through this week in the Boston Hingham and Quincy bay regions. Bass have the peanut bunker pinned to the islands and rocky promontories while the blues are just outside the bass in the deeper channel water.

Bernie Fox’s group from Essex Junction, VT took advantage of the Boston’s Harbor Hotel’s hospitality on Rowe’s Wharf. Departing from the Wharf at 5:30 on the BAY-FLY, the group’s first stop had the anglers battling blues from 8-12 pounds. After the first-light bite slowed, Capt. Tom headed out to the Outer-harbor on up to Nahant looking for bass tight to the rocky shoreline. Finding little life to the north, the group headed back to the inner-harbor to find a good school of bass feeding just off of the rocky promontories in Quincy bay. Numerous bass between 24 and 27 inches took the bunker imitator presentations. Two Keepers in the low 30-inch size class came over the rails.

Out-of-State anglers here on business hailing from Georgia, Rochester, NY and Utah took advantage of the some of Boston’s best fall fishing. Todd Campbell (NY) and his mother found non-stop blues and bass fishing from 1- 7 pm on Wednesday off the Airport and Rainsford Island. Mom’s 35”, 15 pound bass took top honors and Todd’s 12 pounds blue took a chartreuse Half & Half. The Mom and Son duo were back at the feeding stripers in Hingham bay on Thursday morning. Once again, Todd’s mom upstaged him, with another keeper bass in the low 30-inch class.

Capt. Tom headed to Rowe’s Wharf to pick-up James Overturf from Utah for his second trip this season to Boston’s World-Class Destination Fishery on Thursday afternoon.

James was into bluefish immediately at the reserve channel entrance off the airport. Moving to Thompson’s Island, the anglers found a big school of bass feeding on the peanut bunker. Small keeper bass between 28 and 30 inches, as well as numerous stripers in the 24-27 inch size-class, took subsurface presentations. The “Grocery” fly on the long-rod worked excellent as did rubber Fin-S and Sassy Shads on light-spinning gear.

As long as the bait holds, we expect this good fishing to continue through at least mid-October. Plenty of football size bluefins just outside the bluefish in the deeper water close to the coast chasing the same bait fish. Spin fisherman are hooking-up to these fish and a few fly rodders are giving them a try.
