Srawberry/Rockport/Echo report.
#1
[Tongue]Well Finally made the time to hit a few of my favorite spots this last weekend, Saturday made it to the Berry, tried chicken creek east, Caught 4 cutt ranging from 16" to 22", only fished it for 4 hours. I tried every lure, jig and presentation I knew, but the only way I could get them was to dead stick it. Seen alot of fish suspended on the Vexilar, they would chase but not hit. then lose interest and leave. So we went to check some ice conditions on some of my other favorites. Drove past Jordanell zip, nada zilch, no ice. went past Rockport looked to scary, went to Echo, looked scary also but tried any way, fished for an hour, just out from the marina area, nada zip zilch, again tried alot of stuff, nothing would even follow, and saw nothing ont the vex, the ice was grey but about 6 inches, so packed it in and went home. Sunday looked great so went back out to the Berry, this time tried the Marina area, was onto a 23" cutt withing 2 minutes of punching my hole, but then it slowed, only caught 5 in 4 hours all within 20" in 35' of water. Decided what the hell only live once so we packed it in and went to the Rock, went to the second turn around, west side. Slid down the mud, and slogged thru the rest of the mud to the ice edge, tested it with my big toe then got on it, it creaked, cracked and growned but held, so I walked on out, let me tell ya the first punched hole I went past had 3 inches of clear 1 inch of grey ice, you couldnt have gotten a pin up my @$# with a jack hammer after seeing that, but I kept going, found an open hole dropped in the vex, seen active fish right on the bottom, dropped in a foxy with some waxies attatched and wammo had a 10" perch on, filleted him made some cutt bait and couldnt keep em off, we ended up catching two limits in about 45 minutes, I was fishing in 40' of water and they were all over the bottom. The hardest part was waiting for the jig to get to the bottom, as well as trying not to think about how thin the ice was for my 6' 2" 220 frame. dragging a sled loaded with the essentials. Didnt get a troutski but really didnt try, but hopfully the ice gets better, its was a little scary walking back in in the dark, hearing it crack with every step. hopfully the temps stay down. hope this post helps ya.

[cool]Thanks for the report, icehole! I'm gonna hit Rockport tomorrow, so this will be helpful! Perhaps if I use foxy jigs or whatta crickets instead of the old teeny rat finky under a kastmaster, I'll get into bigger perch. I also have a jigging rapala in a perch pattern that I want to try to see if I can get some real toads from there!
