Oregon Fising Update

Fisheries Update

October 4th – October 10th, 2002

The lower Columbia coho fishery is something to look at for the weekend. The big tide series that we will be seeing should bring in the final wave of coho for the few sport anglers targeting them. The crabbing alone is worth the effort! At Bonneville, the chinook fishery is hit or miss for plug plunkers or backtrollers. The good news is, most of the fish being taken are of the upriver bright variety making for a nice late season bonus! In Tillamook, recent commercial troller catches indicate the fish are staging.

Some personal record catches for commercial trollers were recently set! The bite inside the jetty has been great the closer you get to low slack. That will be late afternoon by the weekend. The large tide series should also bring better success to spinner anglers working the middle and upper stretches of the bay. Nehalem Bay is spotty with a mixed bag of coho and chinook coming from the mouth to tidewater.

Spinner trollers near the town of Nehalem troll weed free! (Not true in Tillamook). The recent rain that hit Tillamook County had no significant impact on rivers so salmon are still collecting in tidewaters of the Trask, Nestucca, and Salmon Rivers and should fall more easily this weekend with the better tide series.

The Sandy and Clackamas Rivers have both received the first serious influx of coho, but the fish have been lock-jawed much of the time. The North Santiam continues to provide good fishing for summer steelhead. Nestucca and Siletz anglers report seeing lots of fish but that biters are rare.

South coast rivers are fishing well with a strong coho run in addition to chinook. Crabbing is good in Siletz and Yaquina Bays. Scheduled for stocking this week with legal trout are Hagg, Detroit, North Fork and Foster Reservoirs, Alder, Buck, Dune, Erhart, Georgia and Perkins Lakes and Mt. Hood Pond.
