LAKE DAVIS: With ice conditions stabilized and improved weather conditions, fishermen have begun venturing out onto the ice. On Sunday, Sal Ramos and his fishing partner James Esttrella fished the Coot Bay area of the lake. They landed three fish up to 3.5 pounds. Their bait of choice was Powerbait. They were fishing just off the bottom in 18-19-feet of water. The ice was approximately 11/2 feet deep. Access is satisfactory, with the snow having been removed down to Mallard Cove on the east side road. Always use the ice with caution and at your own risk.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing remains good at the south end, the Popcorn and cattle guard areas. Some 5-7-pounders starting to show up. White and purple wooly buggers working well. Spinners using Sierra Spoons in yellow with red dots or frog patterns. Also using U-20 Flatfish in fire tiger, rainbow and tui chub colors. Krokodile lures also working well from shore. Boaters doing well with Flatfish and Sierra Spoon specials in chartreuse or red with black dots and frog colors. The Gilly, 358-6113. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

TOPAZ LAKE: Those anglers venturing out here are doing well for the most part. Some nice, fat fish coming out. Terry Ames from Coleville caught a 4.5-pounder on Sunday from a boat. Fish are near the surface and seem to be towards the north end. Orange Powerbait is working well. Fire tiger patterns are also working well. There’s early morning fog. There’s some ice scattered on the lake, but it clears when the sun comes up. Roads are clear. Topaz Marina, 266-3550. Topaz Lodge 266-3338.

TRUCKEE RIVER: Fishing remains decent despite the weather. There is a window now where the flows are really good. As the temperatures start to warm the river will rise due to all the snow in Reno so go now. There have been many Brown trout caught this winter in the 20-inch range. Most are taking small nymphs such as the HBI and Baetis nymphs. Scuds are also worth a try. The slower moving pools are where most of the fish are holding now. PACIFIC OCEAN: The next three months of saltwater fishing will be dominated by some Bay Area charter boats running sturgeon and striped bass trips in San Pablo Bay. Emeryville boats will start their trips on Saturday, and will continue through mid-March. The 2005 ocean salmon season will open on April 2 and the halibut fishing in San Francisco bay should commence around mid-April. For information or reservations, call (510) 654- 6040.
