Oregon Fising Update

Fisheries Update

October 11th – October 17th, 2002

Tillamook Bay is inundated with seaweed and it is frustrating most anglers. Thankfully, the ocean has been friendly and is booting out some quality fish! Many chinook over 40 pounds have been weighed in at Garibaldi and many more are due to come in!

The chinook did not show as well as they should have for the tide series that we are coming off of. There is however, some decent action taking place in the tidewater sections of the Trask River. The Nestucca has witnessed some great fishing recently but that should also slow with the upcoming weak tide series. Crabbing is fair at best in Tillamook County with fresh salmon carcasses getting the best results in most estuaries.

The seaweed is also plaguing crabbers in Tillamook. Conditions are better at Nehalem Bay where a few chinook and hatchery coho are being taken daily. The catch and release fishery at Nehalem for native coho is spectacular. Nestucca chinook fishing has been spotty. The Salmon River is jammed with anglers. Chinook are being taken sporadically on the Siletz River. Yaquina River salmon fishing is fair, the Bay remains good for Dungeness. South coast chinook fishing is holding up well.

A few diehards continue to fish salmon at tributary mouths on the Columbia, but the run is dwindling. Crabbing is excellent out of Astoria. Sandy River anglers are taking coho and while the Clack is also getting silvers, water temperatures are giving them lockjaw. Steelhead fishing is holding up well on the North Santiam. Smallmouth bass are active and willing on the Willamette. Hagg Lake visitors no longer get a free ride; there's a machine at the gate which will dispense day passes. Detroit and Dexter Reservoirs are scheduled for stocking this week.
