Hey Experts-Pelican Bass Question?
#1
Ok Kayote, Kentofnsl. TubeDude, Killer, etc.,
I have a question!!![mad] After cleaning the Largies from Pelican I consistantly see a large mass of what looks like small curled worms in there intestines. The last bass I caught just yesterday had the same thing, especially the larger one!!![unsure] I've asked this question of the DWR and received no response.[mad] What is it and do we need to be concerned? Recognizing that it's in their stomach, I haven't been concerned about eating them. I know about the parasites found in the blues and to some extent the bass which doesn't bother me as long as I don't eat sushy.[Wink] I did notice however the meat a little soft this time????

I know this has been discussed before, and I think even the DWR has made a statement. They are parasites, but are not harmful to humans, especially if you fully cook your fish. Not that appetizing though, I think I'd pass just for aesthetic reasons, not for safety.

Cat_man,
I'm well aware of the white/yellow parasites in the meat!!! I have never seen a discussion on what I'm asking. If you have a source let me know.[Smile] I even have a web site/write up on these meat parasites if anyone is interested. I', talking about small curled up worms in the intestines in mass!!![crazy]

Sorry, I can't be of any help because, as far as Pelican goes, I catch them, but I don't eat them.

Leaky , I have never fish Pelican so you take this into account but fish I have harvested from Utah Lake this ice season also had belly full of small worms . These worms looked like Diptera larva (Midges) to me . Do you think it could be the same with your fish ? I would think it could be just midge larva . Do you have any pics of the critters ? Why you would want to eat a poor ole bass is beyond me . LOL
