RockPort on V-Day
#1
Hello, I am a new member today.

I went up on rockport with a friend of mine, and have never fished the rock before, and decided I would give it a try. We got there at about 1 pm, on the south west side, and fished with a fish finder. Only a couple of fish went by and no takers. We drilled and drilled and could never find any goups of fish so we decided to drive back towards the dam still on the west side. We found that there were so many holes not fozen over that we didn't have to drill anymore, which was heaven, but still no fish. We moved all over, deap to shallow with the fish finder, and nothing still. We moved south around the first bend of land and we started to see more fish, but they were all up with-in the first 10 feet of water each time, but still no bites. It started to rain so we called it a day and just as I reeled up my line through the hole a rainbow chased it up. I saw it through my ice hole and dropped my line back down as quick as I could and landed it. It was a nice Bow about 17 in. not to fat, but ok. All the fins were there so I figure it was a native.

Also the ice was melting and water was sitting on the ice in small ponds, but the ice it-self was 5-7 in. thick.

I wasn't to happy about the very, very, very, slow day. But still happy to be ice fishing. We ended up with one bow and nothing else. I want to try the rock again, but most likely not this year, u never know though. For the most part I think i'll stick with the Berry for the rest of this ice fishin year. I was born and raised Ice fishing that place, and love it to death.

And also if any one could tell me where to fish on the rock it would be very helpful for the next trip up there.

it's good to be talking about fishin,

Rabid Fisher, look back at the Rockport posts. You will find the information that you are looking for. I would guess your problem is one of two things. Depth you are fishing. The perch are in water that is 25' to 45' deep.
Next thing most first timers do wrong is that they are not in contact with the floor of the reservoir. The perch don't show up on many fish finders as fish. The floor will show small mounds or hills that may look like structure. This is the schools of perch hanging on the very bottom. If you cast to the bottom and then reel up 2 or 3 turns you will be above the perch. They will not come up to your offering so you must lower it back down to the perch. Do these two things and you will catch perch. DKS.

I was up last week for the first time. It took me a while to realize that the perch didn't show up on the finder. For the most part, they just look like the bottom. What I did notice is that my fish finder would say that the depth was 41', yet the bottom was up at 39' on the graph. You just have to watch very closely for this.

The fish that were cruizing at a depth of 10-15' were trout. We saw (and caught) several of these while fishing for the perchies.
[left]As DKStroutfitter stated, you really do have to fish close to the very bottom in 25-45' of water for the perch.

I'm glad you decided to join us here on BFT. I would echo the same advice the other guys have offered. In addition, we noticed a harsh drop off in action starting at about 11am. Fishing was pretty slow after that. Again, welcome aboard..[Wink]

Hi Rapid Fisher... and welcome aboard!

Too bad things didn't go better for you yesterday, I guess thats why we call this hobby that we all love "Fishing" and not "Catching"...

There's always another day- better luck then... PB

welcome to the best board in the west.
sorry that you didn't catch any perch.
we were on the rock on sunday, at the south west end of the lake, in 30 feet of water. we caught most of our limits on perch eyes.
stay on the bottom for sure.
good luck.
