How do you have your sonar rigger for ice?
#1
Curious on others setups for ice fishing. How is your sonar rigged?

I am working on a crazy concept idea for mine as we speak.

I went pretty simple on mine. For the transducer, I took a 3/4" pvc "T" and a section of 3/4" pvc pipe around 24"long and glued them together. Next I glued in two 5" pieces of pipe into the horizontal part of the "T". I drilled a hole through the end of the vertical piece and attached the transducer to the end of the tube. Then I wrapped all of the extra wire around the vertical tube in a neat tight spiral going up to the top and across one of the horizontal pieces. This allowed for no loose wires hanging around. I left only about six inches to allow for connection the the sonar display unit.

For a battery, I took a battery back-up unit for a computer and pulled the power cell out of it. It is 12v and only weighs around 5-6 lbs but has enough power to keep my sonar running all day for two days in a row. I put the whole set up in a plastic "ammunition" case that you can buy at most outdoor retailers. (other's call them "dry boxes") This has worked well for me and protects my sonar from damage when those inevitable "oopsies" happen. The dry box is watertight and will float if I were to..... OOOh I can't even say it...

Good luck and better fishing!

One of the better ideas I came up with was to purchase a through-the-hull" transducer for my fishfinder. I cut a hole in the top of a five-gallon lid and used that as my hull. The transducer is always pointed straight down and the ice doesn't freeze (of course if it is cold enough anything will eventually freeze) because of the little insulation that the lid provides.

Cool idea Kent. I have been rigging mine with PVC pipe too. I'll have to try your idea. Thanks.

I bought an orange ammo water tight ammo box from sportsmans. I bought a 12 volt battery and a cigarette lighter male and female ends. I drilled a hole in the ammo box and installed the cigarette lighter plug wired it to the battery. then the male end I wired up to my sonar power plug. I bought a R.A.M. ball mount and mounted it on top of the box. as for the transducer I used 3/4 pvc pipe and 3 3/4 tees. i used nylon ties to hold the transducer line on to the tee and mounted the transducer towards the bottom. My first trip out i had a problem though, my transducer didnt want to stay verticle in the water and discussing this issue with BLM he said he melted lead in the bottom of his pvc pipe to balance the weight of the transducer. I will take pictures of it, but dont have the camera accessable.

fishin4fun,
I've tried several times to make connection to your post on your solution but have been unsuccessful? [unsure] Have also ran a search but still can't find it. Would like to see it. [Smile]
