Hey all, not asking for a honey hole or anything, but can someone with experience catching the big macks through the ice at the gorge give me some pointers? I want to go back up there next weekend and last time all I could catch were small 3-6 pounders.[crazy]

Where did you go? I'm still anxious to try to get there next weekend too, but I've heard various ice condition reports, etc. I would like to hit Buckboard.

I walked onto the ice from the first dirt access road south of buckboard marina. There were quite a few people fishing over the river channel and everyone seemed to be catching fish, but the biggest fish I saw iced was in the 7-8 lb. range. I know that they've been pulling some 20-30lb monsters through the ice and I'm hoping to run onto one myself.
Best of luck!

What day did you fish that area? We were there Saturday and went down the next road south of the road you went down. Sounds like we went down the wrong road, we were thinking about trying that road but before we knew it we went by it, so we just went down the next road. How did you do and what time did you get there? WH2

Not sure what time we got there, probably 7:30 or 8:00. We caught four macs in the 3-6lb range without even trying to. I was fishing right on the bottom hoping that would give me a better chance at a big one. Everyone else was fishing about 20' above a 60' bottom. Everyone seemed to be catching some, but all were the smaller macks. Best bait was 1-2" tube jigs, tipped with minnows or sucker meat. After a couple of hours we moved in to about 20' of water and caught our limit of rainbows in about an hour using smaller ice flies & maribous tipped with mealies. The bows were great eating, but I really want to find one of those bigger macks!

What day were you there? Did you come from Green River or Manila? How big were the bows? WH2

We were there the Saturday before last, the 12th. Bows were 13-16" range, one 19". We came down from Green River.

In the post one of the guys made a week ago about catching the bigger macks, up to 33 lbs, he said they were fishing in deeper water, 100ft. Where we were fishing it got up to 92 foot in one spot but we should have moved around more. We drilled a dozen holes or more but they were all in a line and all the fish we caught were in 82 ft of water. The map we were using showed an area south of us that was 100 ft deep but it was 1/4 to 1/2 mile away, I guess we should have tried it. I thought it was a lot easier driving down from Green River than coming from the other direction. Before we left we moved into 60 foot of water and were marking a lot of fish that were 20 to 30 foot deep, I guess I should have tried a smaller bait, from what you said they were probably bows. WH2
