Strawberry report 3/15/05
#1
Fished the marina again this morning from 7-11. Another excellent day. We landed 22 cuts between 2 of us. All but one in the slot and it was about 12 inches. Smallest cutt I have seen out of strawberry. Fished paddlebugs and finkeys tipped with mealys and waxeys in 31 feet deep and never moved. It never got hot and heavy but fairly constant all morning. Walking, wheeling, and sledding are not a problem on the ice as it is very hard packed. The ice was really popping and cracking today but no slush. Just good ice and good fishing with nobody else around. With the cold nights we are having again the ice should last for awhile and hopefully the fishing stays good.

Bigcat,

Thanks for the report. Were you giving the jigs lots of action or just letting it sit there? Also were you down at the bottom?

I was up there today as well, was fishin with Sliverslinger his wife and sliverslingers cuz. What a nice day to be on the ice! Our day was a lot like Bigcat's with the fishing never getting hot but stayed some what steady from 7-11:30am. We iced around 40-45 fish, all slot except for one chunky 17'' rainbow and one 14'' cutt. White Jigs-paddle bugs tiped with wax worms seemed to be what the fish wanted most. Most of the fish were from a foot to three feet off the bottom, but we did have a few come in suspended from 10-6' below the ice. The bite was usually really light and would hit while jigging or seconds after. We fished in 18-28' of water. Fun, Fun, Fun! Can't wait to do it again.

We caught all of the fish within 1 foot of the bottom and saw no suspended fish on the finder. When the fish would hit we were totally dead sticking it. It seemed to help if you bounced the jig off the bottom a few times and cranked it up one foot and then wait. Has anyone else ever found it useful to bouce it off the bottom a few times. Maybe it muddies up the water a little bit and attracts them?????

Buckfever,
Yes I agree it was an excellent day to be on the ice. Lots of sunshine, no wind, good company, and plenty of fish to go around. Sounds like you had 4 in your group compared to our two and caught twice the number of fish but averaged about the same amount of fish per rod as us(did that make sense?). Did you fish at the marina. We were east of the marina and there was one group around the point to the north east of the marina and then I saw one group that looked to be out from the boat ramp or maybe just west of it. Was that your group? I usually don't turn my radio on when I fish there on tuesdays cause there usually isn't anyone to talk to. If I'd known you were in the area I would of come by and said hello. Maybe next time. Hoping to get out one more time next tuesday and then it will be time to hang up the rods for a few weeks and stay local until the new family addition arrives.

Hey Bigcat, we were the group just north east of the Marina. I did make a few shout-outs on the radio, but did not get any replies. Wish I could have given you a shout out. The wife had yesterday off and she made me promise that we would I would take her to the Berry-What a wife!! What is even better is that she out fished me!! I was really proud of her and she is even 5.5 months pregnant. The hard ice and crusted snow made it nice for her to walk-waddle through. Jake
