Fished the Weber River today. Weather was beautiful and I got totally sunburned. I fished with mostly spinners and caught 10 nice browns. 2 of them were around 14 inches. The Weber is a nice change from the hustle and bustle of the provo. I have two questions from today:
1) I also caught a big 18 inch white fish. Do people eat whitefish? I let it go but should I have kept it or given it away to somebody so the poor browns have more to eat?
2) there have been posts recently of people catching 18" browns on the weber. Are you people just exaggerating or did you really measure out 18" fish? If it's true I'm really jealous. What makes me doubt even more is that people claim they catch huge fish on the provo all the time when they are actually pretty rare. That tribune article that somebody just posted said there are only 8 out of 4000 fish 18" or greater on the provo now.

I have caught few trout over 20" on the Weber River . I haven't tried much in the past years but they use to be in there . I credit it to the bait fishing allowed back then . Sure hated seeing it turn to fly and lure only in the one section but it should give you more fish to catch . My biggest brown was 26" and cutt was 22" from the Weber . I even found a 20" bow there . I'm sure there are still some monsters(30+") in there which I hope to catch some day .
Whitefish are very common on the Weber and alot of people eat them . I wouldn't worry about the trout not having enough to eat there . I sure the big boys dine on some whitefish . Try the Mothers day caddis hatch and you will see some bugs on the water then .
If you want a bigger brown keep trying . They don't eat all the time but when they do it is easy to hook them . Try some tube jigs and drag them on the bottom or thru the snags . You will lose a few but can be very rewarding . Rapalas work quite well also but are more spendy .

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll have to try a whitefish for dinner some time. And I guess with this year's excellent snowfall things should start looking up. And i'm not complaining about the size of fish in the Weber, it's just that any fisherman always gets jealous when he hears about buddies catching the "big ones"

My take on the weber since January has been at least one brown over 18". In fact the saturday after presidents day I horsed out a 21" brown and let him swim free. I took a 19" out two weeks ago along with 20+ whites. I flyfish so I don't know if that is better or not, but most bait fishermen around me were not catching them as big. If you really want to catch a nice fish, get one of the sculpin imatations from walmart. They work wonders on the ogden, weber, and provo. If a snobby flyfishermen gives you bad looks, just laugh and fish one.

Hey actionj,
what part of the weber were you fishing? I hit a few different spots about 3 weeks ago and caught a ton of moss. I was using a rapala though. Did you run into very many snags?

Tube: I used to look up to you because of your vast knowledge, now I only frown upon your existence. Why?!? Size 28 Woolly Buggers?!? WAAAAAY too big. The serious fishers fish BWO, that is BWO eggs. Size 38 baby!

I tried to tie some of those BWO egg patterns up but my spider web thread kept breaking when I'd attempt to whip finish it. Very discouraging....[cool]
