Help!! HFT said that the crappie were being caught at Willard, so I thought that I would venture a trip. I got there a little later than I wanted due to the honey do's (9:00 pm). Talked to a gent. who was just pulling off. He said that they caught quite a few crappie. So now I am excited, we drove around to the south side of the marina (the north marina) and started to fish back around to the north until 10:30. No takers, nibbles, bumps or thumps for either myself or my buddy! Whaddup with that? My questions are these.... 1) was I too late? I've fished much later than that on Newton in years past for them. And 2) are my lure/jiggs not what the Willard crappie want. I was using 1/32 oz tube jiggs in red/white and yellow white, and clear or white boogers with a white head. Must they be tipped with worm or waxies like when ice fishing?

I'm just guessing here, but I think your lures might have been too big. Early season crappie like the small lures, and James said 1/64 or even smaller.

Hey guys,I ventured out yesterday also after a stop at Hooked to pickup some of those small jigs you mentioned.I also got nada, zip, zilch for my efforts.I wandered over to the south bank of the channel opening of the north marina where I observed a gentleman knocking the you-know-what out of some really nice crappie. He showed me the jig he was using which was the same exact one I was using.I fished as close to him as I dared to no avail. The water is still very cool so maybe when it warms a bit, more crappie will populate the marina.Oh well,it beat sittin in the office wondering what the fishin was like!!

Don't get to discouridged, the guys you are watching are experts at crappie and just about all they do is Crappie.
Small is important 1/80th or 1/64th.
the bite is light as Tube dude said so watch for your bobber to lift not go under.
fish over structure.
have fun guys!
