Got wiper on my mind! So gonna give it a try this sat.But i have some questions first.First question i am going to fish the southside and is there still a gazillion bugs on the dikes? Second question since wipers are a crossbreed between white bass and stripers wont they like anchovies to? Also can anyone give me directions to get to the south dike ? And is anyone going to be fishing that area this saturday since its going to be a beautiful day![sly]

Ocean, to get to the south dike you will head west literally out of the parking lot of Smith and Edwards. If you don't get off that road it will take you directly to the south dike. I have never heard of anyone trying anchovies for them, but their main forage is gizard shad. I see no reason why they would not work. Make sure to bring some white and chartruse plastic and or marabou jigs they seem to be doing the best right now. With any luck, and if the weather gets better I might be up there myself. Hope this helps, Jake

One word of warning, that road to the south dike can be a little rough. Nothing that a passenger car can't handle, but it is full of bone jarring pot holes that are so frequent and close together as to be unavoidable. Especially the first 500 yards after leaving the pavement. You have to really crawl along at a snails pace through there. If it has rained lately then your vehicle will be covered with mud splash, and there are several BIG mud holes that you have to steer around and can barely clear around the edge. I sure wish the county would get a grader out there and scrape it level once in a while. It sure needs it.
The bugs are still there, and always will be except in the winter.
Any shad imitating lure works for Willard wipers, and I would think they would bite an anchovy too if it was dangled in front of their nose. But expect them to relate to their local forage. I like the white or pearl colored soft plastics. One guy told me that a green tube jig is what they wanted last week and outfished all other lures 10 to 1, although I have never tried them.
I hope to be out there Saturday afternoon. Look for me in the southwest corner in a green float tube (v-style) with lots of blaze orange on the back, kicking like crazy as I "troll" for wipers and walleye.

I'll be there. Nothing like taking a first timer Wiper catching wannabe to the bay and seeing the look on their face the first time they hook into one. Lauching at the South Marina around 9 or 10. We'll be in a 22 foot Wellcraft costal with a 250 Johnson screw on the back. Say hi or throw rocks if you see us.

Sure, you can drive your vehicle to the light pole. Just stay on the road (or what's left of it) until you get to the northwest corner of the impoundment. It's a long, slow, rough, messy ride; but usually as good a place as any to look for wipers.

When we were out there Saturday the road around the west side was really bad. I am thinking with all this rain it is going to be even worse. But I will probably be out there Saturday afternoon. Fishing the west dike if we can get there.
